tried again, I hope they are in there. Transit does not include file 13r in the txf file automatically (perhaps because I did that file some time ago/received the pxf file earlier). I added it manually, as I did with 13u.
Hope this works.
Although the file you uploaded has r & u in its name, the content is actually missing that file.
Can you re-upload them?
—————————-
I’m proofreading these files and will get them to you as soon as possible.

The translator used the informal adress when adressing the player directly. This is correct as per the guidelines, but in earlier files I did use the medieval formal even when adressing the player, and in a file that was delivered to the client (which sent me for reference) the medieval formal was used thoughout, too (this was to avoid inconsistencies).
Are there updated guidelines concerning this? Or do you have a suggestion on whether to keep it or to change everything to medieval formal? (I would suggest the latter, but I don’t know the bulk of files you already delivered, so I may be wrong).
The guideline I remember reading says informal address. I don’t recall any update to the guideline.
I’ve forwarded this to and I will defer to her judgment though.

I just wanted to let you know that my team has some more capacity for proofreading.

After proofreading the file I copied and pasted the text into Word, where I ran a spell and grammar check and corrected everything that was wrong.

Did assign you 17 o q r already?
Those are the only files I don’t have yet.
If he hasn’t, consider them yours. I do not have the translation though, so please ask for the files.
If he has already assigned them to you and you have finished them, please re-upload them.
Other than that, and a few people still proofing, we’re about done with the proofreading stage, at least for German.
Say, your group wouldn’t include someone qualified to proofread French, would it?
—————————-
had already proofread 17oqr and sent them to . I uploaded them again to the server.
Unfortunately, none of my team feels confident enough about proofreading French, very sorry about that.

A question came up from translator who now proofreads the file 18a:

I don’t want to mislead him, so decided to address you – what to recommend him to do? To keep the informal or to stick to formal address when addressing the player with game instructions? These are files about different spells and how they work, how to use them etc.
Please advice.

Of course, we intended to have everyone follow the guidelines on this issue. Unfortunately, due to time pressure and difficult communication because of it, some files apparently got translated/proofread without following the guidelines and in some cases it was very difficult to figure it out. Since there are definitely some files that have been exported and sent to the client where the informal is used (as the guidelines require), I would in this case suggest to stick to the informal or decide in each case, respectively. If this is too much trouble, just go with medieval formal. It’s not a perfect solution at all, but we simply do not have time to go back and make it all consistent, at least from what I can gather from s statements so far. We will have to accept some inconsistency here, however much it hurts.
Sorry I cannot give you a more satisfying answer.

Thank you for letting me know. This speeds up the process so much!
Do you do that with all your files or just with these ones?
After proofreading the file I copied and pasted the text into Word, where I ran a spell and grammar check and corrected everything that was wrong.

Thank you!
I’ve uploaded 13 hijlnopqrsu and 14 pu, all of them spellchecked.

Okay, basically, we treated the word “SP” as an acronym for “Spirit” so far. Actually I am pretty sure it means “Spirit Points” hence the new translation as “PE” (Points d’Esprit).
The only places you will find “PE” in my file is in the spell description. Usually the sentence looks like this “Cost X Spirit”.
The best translation for this is “Cost X Spirit Points” but the English text was badly written so I tried to improve this a bit.
Also, since the original (Chinese-English) Translators forgot to use the “Spirit Point” translation, the content is unbalanced : we have a lot of examples of “HP” (Health Points) but only rare examples of “SP” (Spirit Points) even though it should be the same.
Since We haven’t updated the Glossary since then, I couldn’t update the translation, though this one is easy to guess.
Anyway, I hope my explanation was clear, please let me know if you need more details
With many thanks

No worries, I am still working on repetition 8 (just starting my day here).
Regarding the other messages, you shouldn’t take the number of files into account, but rather consider the number of words and the quality instead. Repetition 8 for instance is around 9000 words, that’s like 2 files in one, AND the quality is extremely low.
Plus, I don’t know if you noticed but we’re working extremely fast with this project, I mean, come on, 9000 words to proofread perfectly in 1 day? The quality is so bad I would have to retranslate every segment! An average productivity for a quality translator is 2000/2500 words a day (translation), here I’m doing 3 times this amount of work (Yes, I’m proofreading, but you should see the quality I’m dealing with, just look at the time I spend on each file…)
Anyway, don’t worry, if I have some availability before the deadline, I will make sure to let you know. I just don’t want to end up with more files that I can handle and be responsible for a fine. Please review your numbers and get your facts straight, I don’t appreciate to be accused of slacking off, especially when I work my *** off to save this project.
has had do Repetition 9. Which means you don’t have to do that. And in fact we want to avoid duplication, so don’t do Repetition 9. I know, I know, and I need to better coordination. We’re working on it.
By now you should have only Repetitions 8 and 8 q t v. If this isn’t right, let me know.
Also, when you are done with Repetitions 8 and before you start with the rest of section 8, make sure to Insert Extract on those files first. You only have to do it once per Project.

I just uploaded the proofread files r and i.
It took me 1 hour and 26 minutes to proofread file 18 r and 1 hour and 28 minutes to proofread files 18 i.
Will upload file 18 s tomorrow.
—————————-
Yes, I do that with all files, spell check is a must.
—————————-
I just thought I’d let you know that I am still working on 18a, fixing the tags and proofreading. There are a lot of messed up tags, and there is also a lot to fix in proofreading — many segments are very poorly translated (and by that I mean they are almost incomprehensible and absolutely need to be fixed). I will send you a few more comments when I am done.
I started resetting some of the segments to the original, because sometimes it is easier to quickly type in a new translation than to edit what is already there (these tags everywhere require lots of concentration).
For this reason, progress is slow. I spent 6.5 hrs by now, and Transit tells me there are 35% of the file remaining. I will continue and I hope I can get it doneght — but it may be late, or tomorrow.
Sorry for the bad news — I had hoped that it would be less trouble. I’m doing my best to get it done asap, but it is a lot of work just to meet a mum acceptable standard.
—————————-
if it’s too much to fix the tags, why not just print the current translation, download the original English, and using the printed translation as reference, start proofing on the “new frame” provided by the original English? This way you don’t have to fix the tags first.
—————————-
I just uploaded file 18s.
It took me 1 hour and 16 minutes to proofread it.
—————————-
thanks for the suggestion.
I am now at 12% remaining and will have to finish it tomorrow. I hope I get it done by noon or in the early afternoon (central european summer time).
I will do my best to make sure it is ready to be shipped as I guess you won’t have time to do any additional checking on it…
PS: And by the way, this CS is killing me – not once have I been able to send a message on the first attempt.

Okay. Words, not files. Gotcha.
Now about this quality, how bad is it? was going to skip proofing for this translator, but now I’m not so sure.
You’ve been doing excellent work,. We wouldn’t make it without you. Let’s put that time I put my foot in my mouth behind.
—————————-
you should be about done with 17 u v. When you’re done with that, after uploading those, contact .
Her vettors say that 1-5 are problematic, with old Glossary terms and the 31 character limit not observed in many places. So check with her, please.
—————————-
already told me that there problems with the 1-5 files. Did you get my 3c-file and had a look at it?
As I told you I had severe problems with my Transit version while working on these files and I had to save each language pair separately instead of as a bunch, which was quite a hassle. I just want to be absolutely sure that you have my proofread files. If this is the case, please provide me with some glossary-deviation examples. If not, please tell me asap!

I have just uploaded 17u+17v.
As for the 1-5 files, I have already contacted and .
—————————-
When you send your bill for proofreading 18a, can you separate out the time you need for fixing the tags and the time actually spent proofreading?
Proofreading cost is part of the business, but fixing tags are caused by the translator. For little stuff, we don’t care, but for major headache like this we’d like to know how much extra this translator is costing us.
Chances are you did them both at once and don’t have an exact time count. That’s alright. Just estimate how many percent of your effort went to proofreading and how many on fixing the tags. That’s good enough.
—————————-
I will try to estimate that. The file was messy in both respects — I will send comments on that. I will be done soon, but while I go over the file again to check my work:
Should I mark the segment status? I have now marked everything “translated”, and I’m thinking of marking it as “ckecked 1” or something.
Maybe not that important.

It’s not important at this stage. It’s important prior to translation and prior to proofreading, as it tells Transit what parts still needs to be done and also the word counts for both pre-translated, translated, and untranslated words. But since you are at this point doing the _final_ step, don’t worry about it.

I had just uploaded a rar with few of the files we had to OT to one of the tickets you opened earlier. I believe you will get an e-mail notitfication about that.
Please check the files – particularly 3c had lots of not up to date glossary terms.

checked file 3c and I am a bit puzzled about the glossary deviations. I have always checked for new glossary files on your server but there is just one German dictionary file in the glossary folder (from the 31.3.2010) which I set according to the translation instruction sheet and thus that is the one I have been working with.
At any rate, the terms from this glossary derive from what the vettor has come up with. Do you know the reason for this?
As for plusses, according to the instruction sheet the plusses are for the lead-translator or a similar person in charge. I left those plusses where I was unsure msyself (in most of these cases even the English version sounded strange) bearing in mind that there was lead translator in charge of this.
As for the abbreviations, this is clearly my mistake and I want to apologize for it. Struggling with the growing time pressure and my partly disfunctional Transit version I just did not pay enough attention to it.
If you want me to overhaul these files, just let me know.
—————————-
just to let you know that files 10 qrs have all been spellchecked as well as repetitions files 18, which is the last file I proofread.
—————————-
Lead translator had uploaded the new glossary more then a week ago in two variants: Excel file and IMG file for import to Transit. I am surprised why didn’t you use those. They contain some terms you left pluses on.
Vettors DO NOT change the German for two reasons – they are instructed not to; and because they don’t speak German. So whatever is in these files is either your work or unproofread work of translator. I would like you to check the files carefully, because there is a small chance that:
1. Either I did not receive the proofread file
2. Or that you did not Send properly the proofread files.
In both cases, we need to act quickly to know if what I have are proofread files form you. Please compare them to what you have in Transit and let me know ASAP if what I have are proofread files or not.
—————————-
I just uploaded 18a, tags fixed and proofread, along with some comments, as
18a_German__Tagsfixed_Proofread.doc and txf
to the proofreading folder.
SOME ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
0. I marked the segments as “Checked 1”. If that is a problem, I can reset them to translated and resubmit!
1. My Transit DOES make HYPHENS into TAGs. So far it seems they always were exported as hyphens correctly. But please check to make sure. It would be too bad to have it messed up at this stage.
2. Concerning the original translator: I wrote some comments on the translator in the comments file, but here is an additional comment that I didn’t want to write there so bluntly: If the other files by that translator are anything like this, I wouldn’t hire her again (ever) — I think she does not seem to be capable of understanding the language of the game and translating it properly. I had to edit more than 50% of her segments, and often it was more than only fixing a single word or two.
3. I have a list of new terms that I could not find in the glossary (in the doc). If there is enough time, maybe a lead translator can skim over them quickly. If not, I did my best to keep everything as consistent and common sense as possible.
INVOICE
It took me 13 and a half hours. Estimate: 7 hours on fixing tags, 6.5 hours on proofreading. The file was a big mess in both respects, so I did both at the same time, and I guess that both problems took about the same amount of my time. Expensive, I’m afraid — but I did my best to make the file ready to be shipped!
Do you need a more formal invoice/report concerning these hours?
Please let me know — and please let me know that you retrieved the file!
—————————-
I don’t need a formal invoice, but make sure to submit some sort of invoice to later. I use the information you give so I know who’s excellent, who’s mediocre, and who not to work with, ever. In this case, whatever her rate is, it’s way too expensive to fix her mistakes. I don’t hold the purse string though. That’s ‘s job. I’ve forward your comment to him, but it wouldn’t hurt to send that invoice, oh, Tuesday morning.
I have looked at the fixed file, exported it, glanced at the Excel file, and as far as I can tell, everything looks good. Of course, and her team will double-check to make sure.
Thanks for your help.
—————————-
proofreading the files would require me much less time than in the first run. This time I know how to insert the translations and glossary without Transit crashing in the middle of the process and I have already inserted the new glossary into Transit. I tried it with file 2d and it took me less than one hour to finish this file.
So if you want me to overhaul the files, just give me a go!
—————————-
Okay, I have just (re)uploaded file 8k on the server via the usual link. I proofread this file on the 08/04/2010 so it will probably require some light proofreading since the glossary was updated several times after this date. Writing style/grammar/etc should be good though.
Regarding the Repetitions 8, I strongly recommend proofreading all of this translator’s files. Quality was average to very low, with lots of mistakes (spelling, grammar, nonsense, etc).
Please let me know if you need further details regarding either one of these files.
With many thanks

sorry for this late reply. I can’t take any more proofread files right now but I’ll be glad to work with you, , and other translators on a next project.
No problem. And we’ll be more organized this time too. Not gonna have this sort of mess next time. 🙂
Still, if you aren’t too busy, can you translate several sentences here and there for us today? As we vet the unproofed files, and even the proofed files, we find, here and there, sentences that was left untranslated. Well, they’re human, so I guess they miss stuff too. Of course, there are also plain incompetent ones who skipped whole sections.
But anyway, if you are available today and are willing, we can send you untranslated phrases and sentences (with a few sentences above and below for context) and ask you to translate them. We’ll do this via email, since the sentences are scattered amongst many files, and it’s a lot easier to just copy-paste off the email text rather than doing it via Transit.
What do you think?
—————————-
it’s okay for me to translate the remaining untranslated sentences. I’ll send them by email ASAP.
—————————-
Sure, sorry to be late. I’m now available and to work right away.

—————————-
During vetting of your files we discovered that you have been ignoring the special character codes that tells the game where values go and whether to use a different font for certain names.
Is your computer repaired/replaced? If it is, we’d like you to attempt to fix the issue yourself.
—————————-
You are right on time, thank you. Please login to the usual translators file server, and go to FTP folder. There follow the subfolders: FTP:/files for spellchecking/reInserted_vetted/
We uploaded there files for spellchecking. Please note, that we need the files to be only spellchecked, nothing else. It should be very fast. And to make it faster, pelease select only column B where is the French text before you launch the spellcheck in Excel (so that the spellchecker will not be jumping to English).
Please upload the spellchecked files to “spellchecked” sub-folder.
Thank you.
Please confirm!
Sure, sorry to be late. I’m now available and to work right away.

Please let me know.

Hope you won’t received this mail multiple times, I had some errors when sending.
In order to illustrate a consistency issue (although this time within a same file), we can find these strings:
Spirit Recovery item in cooldown.
Recovery item in cooldown.
Health recovery item in cooldown
Spirit recovery item in cooldown
Recovery item in cooldown
Line 508 to 512 in 18o, but if these strings are kind of the same things, there are translated four times differently…
—————————-
told me you are available to help us finalize this thing.
We have this segment :
Look at this place! What a pit! It figures! We leave the Divine Relam for HUNDREDS OF YEARS, and yet we SOMEHOW manage to come back JUST as the whole thing is in the middle of “gettin’ it up the giggie with a wah-wah brush.”
And this translation:
Regardez cet endroit ! C’est un sacre trou ! Ce n’a rien d’etonnant ! Nous quittons le royaume divin pendant des CENTAINES D’ANNEES, et nous parvenons TANT BIEN QUE MAL a revenir JUSTE au moment oa¹ le as the whole thing is in the middle of “gettin’ it up the giggie with a wah-wah brush.”oa¹ tout part de travers.+
“gettin’ it up the giggie with a wah-wah brush.” – this is an old slang whose modern equivalent is likely “going down the toilet”, or “getting screwed up” in the less polite language. Can you please put it into nice French and correct the segment above?
