French Proofread Terms to Upload to Available Glossary Files

I believe amulet was a term that virtually never occured in JD, so “Amulett” was “free” as the translation for charm. In this project, I think Glucksbringer is a good solution given the fact that amulet does occur regularly.

yes, I will fix up the other two files according to my notes. Should I then upload them for you, here, since you are in charge of it now — or should I use the other upload option / contact the PMs about it?

—————————-

says you are, but of course I need confirmation from yourself.

Additionally, please open a ticket so we can assign files for you. A lot of people are complaining about this Communication System, so we are moving away from it.

Go to:

http://translationstop.com/OT/index.php?a=add

And add yourself in. Put in your id number before or after your name in the Name field too.

For the category, use Z_Get.

For the actual message, just write something like ” I’m available”.

—————————-

Sorry about the delay, I am overwhelmed with work, by now you should have received the new upload procedure if I’m not mistaken.

I will try to find a minute to check your files, just keep working in the meantime.

Also, there is an issue that needs to be fixed with the glossary: both Glitter and Brilliant armor sets have been translated the same. If you come across any of these sets (boots, helmet, shoes, etc. make sure to differenciate them).

Actually if you come across any of these items, please let me know so that we can coordinate things between the proofreaders and update the glossary accordingly.

With many thanks

How are you doing with the proofreading?

I haven’t heard at all from you, is everything okay?

You can upload your files to the CS.

Please give me a little note when you have done so.

Hi:

Sorry for late answer but I moved and in the process my laptop fell. Add to that I had no internet access for a while… a mess.

Anyway, computer is dead. Just got a new one but lost all my files.

I remember having done a little over 10 hours of proofreading.

Do you need anything else from me? Or do you want to send me a time sheet template?

Thanks, Fabienne

—————————-

I told yesterday that I was taking a couple days off, I’ve taken ill.. I’ll send another mail through OT.

I’ll delivery my proofed files Sunday evening or Monday. Hope that’s ok

Client wants to look at the BoI glossary to assess whether to continue BoI with us.

They also asked us to keep the length of terms roughly the same. We have tried to make them understand that both French and English are longer than French, but they say that font size and window size issue in the game means there are limited space available.

To that end we need to redo the glossary and try to keep each term roughly the same length. If it’s a little bit longer, it’s fine. This needs to be done right away, because the client wants to see itght (their morning).

Please indicate whether you’re available. The Excel file isn’t long, some 2000 rows or so. It’s been sorted according to difference in length, so you only have to deal with the beginning. If you are available I’ll give you the link to the file and some further explanation on what to do.

Also contacting in case you’re offline/busy, but either way this gets priority over everything else.

I uploaded 7e and 7f so far (btw, there are two lists of terms I highlighted in my report of 7f I wanted your opinion on).

I did come across some glitter/brilliant armor sets in file 7e:

Glitter Helm/Boots/Shirt are translated Heaume/Bottes/Chemise de brillance

whereas

Brilliant Cassock/Shoes/Boots are translated Soutane/Chaussures/Bottes brillante(s)

Let me know if you want me to make any changes.

Thanks

—————————-

Would you please let me know of your progress? I am writing a report and trying to coordinate a bit efforts.

Two more things:

1. is asking for quality reports on bad files. You can upload them together with the proofread files.

2. I need more people. Which translators do you think is could be joined the proofreading efforts? Someone who wouldn’t make it worse then it is.

is working on sec.7, Emannuelle is supposedly working on it as well (half week passed – no files seen).

I asked to work on sections 1 and 2, which were translated in the beginning of the project and then proofread by the words translators we have.

What would you recommend to continue with? I was thinking about unproofread files form sections 15 and 17, but would appreciate alot your advise.

—————————-

yes, I will be available today.

Please send me the additional info.

—————————-

It’s going fine so far, despite my limited availability at the beginning of the week, I am progressively completing section 16. I will upload some reports with the files in a while.

JM and I have decided to wait a few days before starting to upload because we are reviewing and updating the glossary at the same time. We constantly come across issues in the glossary, like 2 different terms that have been translated the same for instance. In these cases we sometimes need to go back to the files we proofread and update the translation of a term.

I informed about some of the known issues and she recently got back to me. I forgot to inform her about the uploads though.

Anyway, I haven’t received any news from, I sent her a message a while ago to know if she’s okay but didn’t get any answer. I’m not sure anyone has been in contact with her for a while. It might be worth looking into it.

If we need more proofreaders, you might want to ask for her help, I think she said she would be available at the end of the week. Since she doesn’t want to deal with technical stuff and I am not sure about the quality of her work either, it might be best to let her deal with the files that were already proofread. We will need to review the proofread files and track down consistency issues.

Basically all she has to do is download the glossary and make sure that the proofread files are 100% corresponding with the glossary. If she finds a term translated differently, she must replace it with the official glossary translation.

Since we will need perfect matches to use the macro: (for instance God of Thunder and Deity of Thunder wouldn’t work) it’s extremely important that she refers to the glossary at all times.

Anyway, I hope this helps, please let me know if you need anything.

—————————-

Thank you for letting me know, I will take a look at your reports.

The problem with “brillant” and “de brillance” is that there is a strong chance that it will all turn into “brill.” once abbreviated.

I haven’t checked but I am assuming there are extended armor sets from the same family, like “Arcanum Glitter Boots” or “Astute Brilliant Plate” for example. You see my point.

Anyway, I will try to find some time to check/fix this if needed. Thanks for your input.

—————————-

Ok, I’ll take care of it this afternoon.

Please let me know how to proceed then

You can find DEU_tobe_shortened.xls

This is the 02 June glossary with additional columns.

Column C is the length of the English entry. Column D is the length of the German entry. Column E is the percentage ratio) between C & D.

I then sorted the entries according to the ratio, from the largest to the lowest.

The client wants us to “keep the length of the two about the same.” We don’t know what ratio this exactly means, but try to bring the ratio down to about 50 or lower. Use alternative words or abbreviations.

When you are done, please upload the file using the PR upload site and let me know.

Try to get it done by 5 p.m. GMT, please. Actually, make that shorter because I need to remove those numbers.

If you have time, a list of changes would be nice, because now that they asked for this, I’ll have to go through the files in section 03 and update then.

However, the shorten the glossary first, because this might decide whether we have a project or not. Thank you.

—————————-

Oh, just want to add. You can use your own judgment. The difference ratio of 50 is just something I made up. Even the client isn’t sure how much leeway he actually have. All we got is that vague “roughly the same”.

A difference ratio of 50 means that if something is 20 characters long, you can get it up to 30 characters. But if your best translation is 35 characters, I don’t think they’ll mind as long as there aren’t too many.

I think it would be wiser to ask to take care of it since he is the main French translator.

If he is unavailable, I can take care of it, just let me know up until which row I should modify the file.

JM

—————————-

I actually agree with you, but had you contacted in case he’s unavailable.

However, he’s available and will be working on it, so don’t worry about it.

—————————-

did you receive my OT message where you are assigned files for proofreading? Please let me know.

—————————-

Thank you for the detailed response. I wrote to several times asking for updates, but my messages were never replied. Today she wrote she’s sick for the weekend, and I am not surprised.

As to, I wrote her several days ago asking to proofread files 15s-u, but she did not reply either. What do you think about Rashid? He is eager to work and available, do you think he’s capable to improve files following your instructions? Or? Or someone else?

—————————-

yes I received the message, but I haven’t found the path yet to download the file (in files download) _ I have yet to catch up with the new instructions from . Because I am working on another project at the moment, I can’t start working before Sunday, I hope it’s ok.

—————————-

What about? She worked as a proofreader and delivered high quality work if I’m not mistaken.

Would she be available?

If not, we can ask to start reviewing the proofread files to find and fix consistency issues. There were some quality issues with his files in the past, though not as bad as, so it might be best to try to contact first.

—————————-

I just uploaded

German_JD_100201_Localize_2a_for_.xls (by)

German_JD_100201_Localize_2d_for_.xls (by)

I fixed the things that I had noted earlier, and also skimmed over the longer sentences again and fixed some punctuation issues I had noticed earlier.

Please be aware that I only skimmed the files, as the initial assignment was to get a general impression. So there may still be other issues that I didn’t notice, because I didn’t have the time to read them closely.

—————————-

I’m not all the way through but getting close to those terms that are only 50% longer. Should I send it to you now?

—————————-

Take another 15 minutes (to 4:15 p.m. GMT) and send it to me then.

I’ll process it, upload it, and you can download that again and see about incorporating’s suggestion.

—————————-

I’ve uploaded the file in the translations folder (uploading procedure) although that’s probably not exactly where you want the file.

I have marked the third column GREEN for those entries that I changed and marked those entries RED that should be removed from the glossary altogether, in my opinion. There are probably still LOTS of terms that could do with a proofread in the remainder of the glossary.

—————————-

We are working on proofreading the remaining files of Jade Dynasty project in attempt to elevate the overall quality and consistency.

Would you be available to take part?

Thank you for your recommendation. I messaged M-A and, who also was told to have acceptable quality. Otherwise it’s just too slow.

I am not sure if I told you – is asking for quality reports on the bad files. You can upload them to Reports section of the upload system.

—————————-

No worries, I have not forgotten about the quality reports. I am dealing with 20 issues at once on both projects so I need some time to sort things out.

I’ll try to upload some reports during the weekend. Sorry about the delay, I’m doing my best.

With many thanks

—————————-

I understand you’re busy and am not accusing you at all in delaying. You do a great job on this project.

Only one request, I’m going to ask to do same – could you please upload a “demo” version of the files you already proofread to the uploading system (http://001yourtranslationservice.com/newsystem/cgi-bin/up_1001_PR.cgi)? I understand you continually work on all files, but we need to have something for backup. No need to upload file-file – just compress them, and name the file ” sec.16 DEMO”.

Thank you.

—————————-

about the files I uploaded earlier — was not happy with this, as she had actually assigned some files to other translators. Just thought I’d let you know before you do anything with these files.

Best,.

Have no idea why you didn’t get this considering I sent this 43 minutes after you replied the first time. Here’s a copy. Let’s focus on doing this right now and worry about what happened later.

Yes, I just checked the CS and noticed your message. It’s weird because I didn’t get the alert by email like I usually do, so I thought you didn’t reply.

I think this happened because I left the CS window open without refreshing it.

I will take care of it right away.

—————————-

Ok, will do in a bit. I have to take care of the BOI glossary right now.

I’ll inform you when I uploaded everything.

—————————-

I apologize for this late reply. I’m sorry to learn that there were so many problems with some French translators for JD.

I am available for proofreading. I’ll do my best to make things better because I would love to work on the BOI project.

—————————-

Are you about done?

I can’t wait all night long…, no, I can, but I don’t know if can, and even if he can, the delay isn’t going to impress the folks inCalifornia.

It’s the folks inCaliforniawho wants that file and they want it now.

—————————-

I sent the file back to 3 min ago.

I don’t enjoy working 15hours straight either, believe me.

—————————-

I just reuploaded it for you there in case is offline.

http://001yourtranslationservice.com/newsystem/cgi-bin/up_1001_PR.cgi

It’s fixed up to 50% ratio except for some terms impossible to shorten further, that shoud do it with the little time we’ve got.

I’m off until tomorrow.

—————————-

Cool. That’s it forght then. Good night. I’ll be in bed in about 5 minutes myself.

—————————-

I am very glad you are available and interested to take part in our rescue efforts.

There are many files which had not been proofread, and there are many files which had been proofread but contain numerous issues. Main problem is inconsistency of the terminology with the glossary. Please work with the updated glossary found here: http://translationstop.com/files/FTP/French_Glossary_14May.xls. Consistency is the key point to be fixed in the files.

Please begin with these 3 files:

JD_100201_Localize_15s

JD_100201_Localize_15t

JD_100201_Localize_15u

Please try to have them done in a timely manner.

The proofreading will be done on Excel files. You can download all French files here: http://translationstop.com/files/French/Finalized.French_ALL.zip (8MB file, let me know if you have a difficulty downloading large files).

Please proofread the file, putting special attention to:

1. consistency of the terminology used with the last glossary http://translationstop.com/files/FTP/French_Glossary_14May.xls

2. Please adhere to the updated capitalization rules – first letter of first word of each special term, such as special items etc.). We are developing a macro to fix capitalization, but it will work only if the terminology is perfectly consistent with the glossary throughout all files. Since we will have the macro, to save proofreading time, we agreed that if you are making change to some word due to consistency or other reason ¢‚¬œ change the capitalization. But if the term is correct ¢‚¬œ don¢‚¬„¢t spend time on changing capitalization. Let me know if you have any questions.

3. Files need to be spellchecked. Please select the French column in Excel prior to launching the spellchecker.

4. It the files contain lists of terms and proper names -they need to be abbreviated to the 31 char limitation. Please download from here http://translationstop.com/files/FTP/31.rar the two macros in one sheet you may need for that:

¯§ 31 char macro: Open the excel file and have it open while proofreading. Press Ctrl+Q shortcut and the macro will color all lines which contain more then 31 characters yellow.

¯§ In same Excel file, in cell C5 I pasted the macro which detects number of characters in the cell on it’s left. It reacts to change in number of characters as you change it/as you type. Please paste it next to the terms which were colored yellow by the first macro, and it will help you fix it quickly and precisely.

All yellow coloring and extra column with the second macro removed before delivery – it should be a clean file.

3. Additionally please pay attention that correct abbreviations are used for French:

SP (Spirit Points) – PE (Points d’Esprit) [sometimes also Spirit can be abbreviated PE, when matching the context]

AP (Attack Power) – PA (Puissance d’Attaque)

AOE (Area of Effect) – “Zone d’effet”

HP – PV

DEF – DEF

EVA – EVA

LV¢‚¬œ NV

NPC ¢‚¬œ PNJ

CritNull – echecs critiques

CritStrike / assaut critique – coups critiques

CritShield – bouclier critique

route-auto – itineraire automatique

PVP ¢‚¬œ JcJ

Please do not leave any unresolved issues and untranslated terms. If you are not sure about something, you can contact or via CS. Any problems you think I may be able to help you with ¢‚¬œ feel free to contact me via OT or CS.

We are transferring communication on the JD issue to OT, so that could be updated with all messages along with me. Therefore please open a ticket here: http://translationstop.com/OT/ , titling it ” – JD rescue” and please confirm receipt of the assignment in the body of the message.

—————————-

Thank you for letting me know. In this case I am cancelling the files request, and when you are available, please message me on OT and I will assign you other file.

I will double this on OT as I’m not sure you are receiving the messages.

—————————-

I just uploaded the proofread 15s file. I hope it’s all right because I’m working with Open office instead of Excel which is not installed on my computer.

Please tell me if there is any problem.

—————————-

I’m wondering if a word count of around 2000 is even remotely possible and I think it cannot, since the file has 2500 segments. Could you confirm this?

—————————-

First, where is the glossary?

The glossary should translate most of the 02_reps.

Transit does not do translated word count for Reps file and even if it does, the dictionary does not mark a segment as translated when it inserts its terms. The 2000 number came from a formula that gave me. It’s an estimation.

You should not need to translate the entire 02 reps. The glossary should do most of it.

Which is why I’ve been pestering you for it. Get me the glossary so I can import it to Transit. Then you can download it, apply it, and you’ll find there’s much less work on 02_reps.

If working on 02_reps is distracting you from the glossary, I’m more than happy to assign it to someone else so you can concentrate 100% on the glossary. It is that important.

—————————-

I know for a fact that I’m doing much better glossary work if I have translated at least a little before because then I can infer what terms are supposed to mean in context, which contexts and entries are plausible etc. So that is only one reason I would also like to translate.

I have to say that I’m pretty skeptical of entering sentences and phrases into the glossary and to rely on it so heavily. I presume this is for saving time which is of course a reason not to be argued with but generally, I have seen in the last project what headaches can come from less-than-optimal glossary terms (I myself was forced to change glossary terms lots of times because I wasn’t able to infer their correct meaning from context the first time around) and uncritically entering those glossary terms.

So I will concentrate heavily on the glossary for now and get it to you as soon as I can. However, I think that translators should pay UTMOST attention to how the glossary terms fit into their texts and not view them as the mandatory solution but in many cases as a good suggestion. On the other hand, I’ve experienced some (not many) petty discussions about which term would look a bit more beautiful compared to the one in the glossary and these types of discussions are of course to be avoided.

This is not to argue or give you trouble, just so you know a bit of my thoughts.

I will not be able to finish both the translation and the glossary before tomorrow, so go ahead if you want to hand the translation to someone else. I’ll upload a txf up to segment 589.

—————————-

You have good points there. I wish you were more involved in the glossary translation, but I can’t fault you for taking a vacation after the JD project.

I am just worried about lost time here, since as I said before, the halt caused us to lose time while there is no compensating extension in the deadline.

As for reassigning 02_reps_DEU, if you say you will finish it tomorrow, then there’s no point in reassigning it. By the time I find someone it will already be tomorrow. He’ll then take a day to translate is and it will be Monday before I get it back. No, continue on. But please, glossary AND 02_reps tomorrow.

Thank you.
