Translations email archives - January 17 - 22

here is all of file 3. Please complete the translation except for those parts you arleady did, which were from segment 973 to and inlcuding 2584. I am still waiting for the last part of file 3 from you, 03_10. The number of words left uncompleted should be 4454, but that includes the part you have not sent me yet. Once you send it to me I will be able to import it and give you the accurate word/character count of what is remaining. By pressing ALT INS it should automatically take you to the remaining Untranslated segments. Make sure to ignore the segments I mentioned above. Also, please do a search for the ++ characters to find other parts I was not sure of but in segments which are marked Translated. Please keep the ++ there so that I can double check your work. Some segments are marked Untranslated but which I already mostly translated, while others are marked Translated which I would like you to look at. After completing this translation, if you feel I should pay you for some extra words because of this, let me know how much. When do you think you can complete this? I will probably have something similar for file 5 once I finish proofreading it. <

I am once again excited by some small progress I have made with the server, so I have some new instructions for you. When a translation project is completed, I'd like to put it in the Desknow folder in case a customer writes me an email asking for a translation because it erased it or something. By having all previous translations in the Desknow folders, I will be able to send them anything they want using my mobile/ppc, since I will be attaching the files from the server, and will not have to go to an internet cafe and hook up my computer etc. But I do not want the translations to be available for anyone on the internet, so I have changed the download.kenax.cz folders a bit. You can now compare the two by logging into your RW ftp, where you will notice two folders now: Active Projects and Completed Projects. The Active Projects is the one that is available to the web through download.kenax.cz, where Completed Projects is not. You have access to Completed Projects through your Desknow account as well. So the new procedure will be to save all previous projects like I have done in the Completed Projects folder. You can create the necessary sub/project folders and put the finalised translations into a Translation sub folder there (where Translations is a subfolder of the project folder - check how I have it). Later, when I have time, I will move the Original documents from the Active Projects to the Completed Projects folder, since you cannot move files from one location to another through your FTP connection. The only other way you could do this is to download and erase the Original folders, and then upload them again. That would be silly, and actually unnecessary, since I already have a copy of the original on my computer. In fact, I'll probably just erase the originals from the web once I am certain I have it on my computer and the translators do not need access to it anymore, so leave this part of the job to me.

Great, we look forward to receiving them soon. By the way, in your email of Jan. 12th, you mentioned that we said "If I will be translating for you in general, since you stated you do not want a proofread by a separate translator, ...." I'm not sure if I said so, but we prefer a separate translator or linguists to proofread translations, and we think translators for the translation process have to be a native speaker of the target language.

I see. In the very beginning I asked you this specifically and you said you will not want a proofread. Anyway, the way I usually work is I do not charge a markup on any proofread, meaning I only charge what the translator charges me for such work, which is generally between 0.02 and 0.05 USD/word, depending on the language.

> Last-minute email count: 1258.

from your last email I read on your mobile, seems that the above list is exclusively for publishing companies. I don't think we will find great success with publishing companies and think it would be good if you approached various types of companies, so we can see which types yield the best results. In Prague, publishing companies paid for translation work about a hundred crowns per page, this comparing to 240 crowns and more which a translator would get paid by a translating agency (and around 350 Kc from direct companies). So no professional translator would usually translate for publishing companies. And I think these companies usually find their own translators. I am better at projects for companies, preferably large multilanguage projects. One idea I thought was to try Chinese manufacturing companies. They are producing a lot of goods, and the user manuals and advertising material for all those goods must be translated into all the languages and countries those companies are exporting to. It is unlikely that they will be able to find translators to translate directly from Chinese into those languages, so they usually have to go through English. I've been told that my prices are competitive for the Chinese market. I wanted to find a Chinese person to do this for me, but have not yet. Anyway, perhaps you could try a more varied approach: large companies, medium sized companies, manufacturing... It's hard for me to know, but I don't think it would be a great idea to put all our eggs into only one basket regarding this. Regarding registration details for websites which have an email form, I always quickly just type some info to get through the quickly, and only mandatory fields. With google toolbar in your browser, you can set it up so that it fills all these fields automatically. I would not waste my time so much with these forms, as time can get expensive this way. Anyway, lets just keep trying various angles and see what works best. Eventually I would like to pay for advertising as well, so if you run across any good ideas, perhaps you could store them somewhere.

I suddenly have a doubt - are we talking about the same sample? I downloaded a Word document called 'Indesign sample' and it shows about 2300 words - hence my doubt when you mention 500 words. Could you please let me know - and if it is only 500 words, I could send it back very shortly - say by tomorrow afternoon at the latest - if it is the longer one... it will probably have to be next Monday, sorry.

oh my God, you are right. I just checked some of the samples sent to me by other translators and they are that large indeed. Oh well, I guess one has to take risks occasionally with these large and prestigious tenders. Panasonic is very encouraging to me, so I guess I'll just take my chances and hope for the best. Please commence with the larger file then.

I have sent you all the files yesterday in another e-mail. Did you not get that? Sending again. Do I still need to work on 03 or not? I got your e-mail with that 03_all.pxf, but you just told me that I should drop it. Please, let me know exactly what still needs to be done. And let me know which of my e-mails did you receive (time-stamps), so we can figure out why you are missing some of them.

I've already imported all your translations, and now I only need you to go over my sections to the Untranslated or ++ marked parts that I was not sure of. I guess you have not done that with 03 yet?

Oh yes, and the parts you should NOT do in 05 are:

The numbers refer to the segment number, and the right column refers to the file names I assigned you. Again, I need you to look at the Untranslated and ++ marked text in everything else but the four files you did above. Please leave the ++ so that I can double check your work. Once I import and proofread all your work, I will be able to give you an exact word count for this extra translation agency work. I think it is about 5000 words between the two files.

Starting tomorrow morning and until Sunday evening, I must be working on a translation, the deadline of which is Monday 22. When I have finished with this, I will start working on your project, if you agree. If you still dont have enough Czech to English translators, I want you to be sure that I would like to work for you more intensively in case you could provide me with considerable amount of work on long-term! projects!. I am always ready to reduce my engagements with other translation bureaux (for which I can do only express translations or those with very short deadlines) for the benefit of co-operation with you.

right now I do not have any work into Czech but am only bidding on a large project. But if I get something big into Czech I'll let you know.

Question: When do we have the finished translations? I understand you and of course we'd like a professional translation but we can't wait long time. We need this as soon as possible.

okay, I processed all the samples which were sent in so far and can suggest the following two, since you are in such a rush. The first (1) one is from a non-native English speaker and was the best quality among the non-natives. I still have to confirm the price with him but I'm hoping for the already suggested 0.09 USD/word for translation, plus 0.04 for proofread (0.13 USD/word total). It will be a little bit of work with the proofread, but I'll roll up my sleeves and try my best. I studied economics in Canada and believe I have a good marketing flair. The second (2) sample is from a native speaker and he seems to have a good flair for marketing, so the quality with choosing him should be the best, but he is very expensive, and for his translation, with proofread, would amount to 0.28 USD/word. Please tell me which you prefer. Either translator should have it done by Monday, and I already have many tested Russian translators, so that should be done by around Tuesday or Wednesday, with proofread. Waiting for your feedback.

Please let me know. We can accept payment via paypal or moneybookers.

Dear Stella

I only had you down for Estonian. Do you have native translators for all the above and what would you charge for each language? What would you charge for just Estonian? It is only one sentence, and two words.

Please check http://desknow.kenax.cz:8000/ , the new project is already there and available. Also here is Accounting.txt file containing this last project info word count, the one I also updated by FTP on Management directory.

Accounting.txt file looks good, although missing a bunch of orders. Lets get this in order so that we have some practice and everything sorted for future jobs. I changed the folder you created to 7004 PHX Mult20, to give indication that it is more than just Bulgarian, but it turns out that the customer wanted only Bulgarian after all. What is your opinion concerning their letter? Considering I had an agreement with them to help them with such project and considering they already sent me one such multi-language project in the past, do you think I'm justified in thinking they want all those languages. I told them they can expect a heftier invoice on Monday than they originally expected.

I'm sending you the translation, let's make it for some 3 dollars. It is not easy to do such a translation, as I don't have much practice with medical texts. Albeit it doesn't have many characters, I had to check every instance of difficult words, as I could find info about Pompe disease only on the Internet. I checked some sites and it took some time.

thank you for the file and I will try to resolve the below as soon as possible. Considering the new circumstances, can we settle on the original 3$? it seems there was some misunderstanding with my customer and they were only interested in a translation into Bulgarian. Together with the file I originally sent you, they wrote in their email the following: "I have attached an English Document that needs to be translated into Bulgarian also. The project number is 153-12178 The deadline is1-22-07. Can you take this project? Please advise." How would you interpret this, considering you I done such multiple language projects for them in the past and was asked to help them out with these projects in general? I would be interested in hearing your opinion because I will use this for my defense when I send them an invoice for all these lan guage on Monday. Since this is the case, I would like you to reconsider your charge to me. Many of you have offered a small rate or to do this translation free of charge, but on principle I offered you a minimum charge of 10$ for this job. Please tell me what you would like to charge for this translation, consideri ng the new circumstances. I will also reduce my markup to the customer, just enough to cover my time invested in this, which is about three hours (perhaps another 3 hours once I’m done with accounting and processing all the incoming translations). I am rather angry with them but I do not want to ch arge them more than is necessary. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

> I have attached my translation.

thanks for considering me for this job. In order to avoid any misunderstanding from the beginning, I want to point out that I am a German native translation translator, so my primary language pair for translations is English to German. Due to intensive and longterm studies, an M.A. degree in the English language, extended stays abroad, and possibly some natural affinity to the language, I have gained a near-native command of English. As a result, many clients keep asking me to do translations into English for them, and I am happy to answer such requests without claiming English to be my mother tongue. For these reasons, I would certainly like to do this test for you, but would prefer to translate from English into German as a rule. Please let me know what you think. I hope you do not mind me being honest.

I'll be proofreading it after you. I just need a good enough level of English to work with, and the people who have submitted a sample so far fell pretty far short of what I can work with. What would you charge in USD per word for this text?

Question: When do we have the finished translations? I understand you and of course we'd like a professional translation but we can't wait long time. We need this as soon as possible.

Dear Dario

did not receive a response from you concerning my last email yet. I approached some more translators, but still am not fully happy with their submissions. Found one which is doable, but it will be a lot of work to proofread her translation to make it sound a high enough quality for such marketing text. For her I would probably have to charge a total of 0.15 USD/word including proofreading. For such marketing oriented text I am just worried that you have the best quality, or that I give you exactly what you want, and I want to be as transparent as possible of concerning my resources. I wouldn't usually focus so much attention on regular text and I hope this does not bother you. Anyway, the translators are ready and I just need your final decision concerning the English (whether to use the non- native for 0.15 or the native, much better quality, for 0.28). The Russian will be a breeze (charing 0.13 including proofread). It is not a large text, so I assume I can get both languages translated, proofread and doublechecked by the end of the week, assuming I get a response from you by today Monday, possibly Tuesday.

the translation is almost ready. Shall I send it to you now or can I prove it again and send it to you later this day?

I hope you have not been translating the document more than just the sample, because I did not confirm you to start. I was almost going to assign it to you, but one sample just came in which I would rather use. This girl is charging 0.07 Euro, but it will be a lot easier for me to work with her text. For marketing text it is hard for me as a proofreader to make a large leap to good quality, and I feel your text would require too large of a leap to bring it to good marketing text. Although it is generally good. I will rate it and update your record in the database, for surely I will be able to assign you more informative translations, but I must decline for this important marketing text. Hope you are not translating it.

Thank you for sending me these texts, and I do apologise for not having replied earlier - if I am too late for this one, please keep my name on your books for the next job! I have chosen two small sections and trust that they will satisfy your client's high expectations. My rate would be Eur 0,07/source word for this job (or this type of job). I look forward to hearing from you soon.

when do you think you could complete the translation? The customer is stressed with delivery a bit. I also need to translate it from English to Russian, so please feel free to send your first drafts so that the Russian translator can start on it.

thank you for this offer and I am very interested in doing this job. Since I am not translating into my mother tongue I will have to put in more effort for a worthwhile result. This means I have to ask for a slightly higher rate of 0.07 Euro per word of the source text. I am also busy with another project, but I will send you a translation sample until tomorrow or at the latest until Wednesday.

just found someone to take it and the customer is stressed for time. But if you choose to submit the sample anyway, I will rate it and update your record for future work. I will leave it up to you.

> Yes, you can do it. Please as soon as possible. In Russian and English.

>

> Thanks. I'm waiting.

okay, just found a good native and not expensive translator I am happy with. A lot of times translators take a while before they respond. Especially good translators who are already swamped with work. I feel comfortable with this girl's quality and I have expressed to her your concern for haste. Will try to get both (and Russian) done by Friday.
