Translation and Proofreading of French Glossary Files

Thanks for the update and I wish you good luck for finishing this first project and starting (again) the second one.

I’ve open my JD_quality.report and I have to reply, so please forward to the appropriate person if not you. It is very important to me to defend unfair critics of the quality of my work when those critics should be addressed to another translator (as far as I can understand from the JD_quality.report).

I hope that this email will clear any doubt on the quality of my work.

I’m currently available part time for correcting any French files if need/wanted.

In this JD_quality.report, only two files appeared:

French_JD_100201_Localize_18L (translated)

18L was a bad file to translate! Be aware that it has been extremely difficult and frustrating to work on this file, because the already translated segments (nothing I can do about them) did not respect the tags position, and so it went for the fuzzy matches. Your proofreader will have a lot to go through to put everything back to normal. When my segment was extremely similar to the fuzzy match, I’ve used it, even if I did not agree with the offered translation, as I think it will be easier for your proofreader to change everything at the same time. There are also some translations I’ve found very bad, even completely wrong in some instances.

Please find here below a few comments on my translation for the file in subject:

1. directly related to the above comment, a large number of already translated segments (by another translator) did not respect at all the tags’ position within the segment, for example segments 94, 118, 269a¢¢¬‚¦ Same for the fuzzy matches, for example segments 76, 139a¢¢¬‚¦ In segment 1120, the “f” of “passif” was behind the tag, which split the word into 2 parts. As it is part of the already translated segments, I assume there are many occurrences of this problem.

2. “heals” has been translated by another translator as “hurts”, so the French meaning is the opposite of the intended one! Might be worth to check across files for heal, healinga¢¢¬‚¦

3. the word “yard” has sometimes be left untranslated by other translators. I would recommend to simply change it into m’‚¨tre, as the difference between those two units are very small and thus would not have any negative impact.

4. “caster” has been already translated by another translator into “lanceur”, which makes sense if limited bt the number of digits, otherwise, I believe that “lanceur du sort” would be more appropriate. “damage skill” has been translated by another translator into “les dommages de la comp’‚©tence”, which to me doesn’t make any sense, maybe “capacit’‚© de dommages” would be better (even if not great). “cloud awareness” has been translated by another translator into “sensibilisation nuage”, which to me doesn’t make any sense, maybe “nuage de conscience” would be better. But I kept all of them for consistencya¢¢¬‚¦

5. I have used a few + when unsure about a translation

We need to ascertain whether we need to spend more effort with our German files and if we do, in what respect.

To that end, I’d like you to download the German translation from the following site.

I want you to randomly pick 1 file out of each section and then read it through. Spend 15 minutes on each file, paying particular attention to capitalisation and consistency of terms (see glossary for what the official terms should be). Watch out the hyphenation and spelling too.

Write a report on each file and let us know your assessment regarding the quality. Do not bother fixing errors and stuff like that. That is not what we are asking you to do at this moment.

There are 19 sections. Add a 20th file from one of the longer sections. Again, pick it at random.

Your report will be used in deciding what to do with the German files. Because of that, we’d like it as soon as possible.

Make sure to put your name in the file name. In the report itself, write down your name, id code, how much time you spent doing this assessment, and which files you checked. Write down also your assessment of the condition of each file and then also a general assessment for the project as a whole. At 15 minutes per file, I estimate 5 hours for 20 files, and another hour for writing the report, for a total of 6 hours. But write down the actual hours anyway.

good to hear from you. Yeah, I have just started skimming over the first file (4b) und I think spelling and formatting is ok but I have found several glossary deviations already.

My strategy is to sort the glossary in alphabetic order, then skim for different translations of the same term first,and check those in the most recent glossary (German_Main__2504) and correct terms if necessary.

As I said, I think consistency is the most important issue. Otherwise I haven’t come across any serious blunders yet…Knock on Wood!

While proofing, we should also use the 31-character-limitation macro to avoid another round of proofing.

1. 31 char macro: Open the excel file and have it open while proofreading. Press Ctrl+Q shortcut and the macro will color all lines which contain more then 31 characters yellow.

2. In same Excel file, in cell C5 I pasted the macro which detects number of characters in the cell on it’s left. It reacts to change in number of characters as you change it/as you type. Please paste it next to the terms which were colored yellow by the first macro, and it will help you fix it quickly and precisely.

All yellow coloring and extra column with the second macro removed before delivery – it should be a clean file.

4. Additionally please pay attention that correct abbreviations are used for French:

Improve terminology consistency throughout the whole files.

We need to be extremely careful regarding consistency, we will therefore follow blindlye the glossary. Please check all terms against the glossary to ensure maximum consistency. If you encounter terms that do not appear in the glossary, contact me and I will try to help you.

Improve the quality of the translation

Some files were just poorly translated, some translators did not care and we have to fix their mess now. Please make sure that the translation sounds fluent in French. If it does not make sense to you, chances are it won¢‚¬„¢t make sense to the gamers either. Be extra careful with verb agreements and spelling, there are many errors to fix. When spellchecking the files, I will strongly encourage you to copy the B column (the translation column) onto an empty Word document and to spellcheck with Word, since it seems to pick up more errors than Excel.

Regarding capitalization, confirmed that item names do not have to be capitalized.

I started working on them today and I am writing down all the terms that I couldn’t find in the glossary (and therefore ended up choosing a possible translation by deduction) or that needed to be shortened (I put my suggestions down) so that I can send you the document once I have finished proofreading one file.

It does take an awful lot of time though, to check every single term and I am afraid I won’t be able to finish the four files assigned me by tomorrow evening GMT. I’ll do my best and see how I get on with it.

your idea (sorting alphabetically) is good, I also found some inconsistencies this way. I also found some longer sentences that are grammatically wrong, but overall, there were not too many issues.

I have now skimmed over 5a, 2a, and 2d; and copied all problems to a separate document. I wasn’t sure whether it makes sense to edit the xls files directly, because I was not sure which ones you were already processing?

Also, I wonder if some of the problems have spread over the whole project via automatic pretranslation, fuzzy suggestions etc.

So I was wondering if the following would make sense instead of editing each xls file separately:

Creating a new spreadsheet into which the ENG and GER terms or segments are copied, into columns A and B, with the new German version in column C, and a comment in note D. This could be done very quickly, one would actually just select the two cells in excel and copy them over to the new sheet, and add the other info.

This way, we could collect our corrections first, add to the list as we go through each file, and then, in a final search and replace fest, apply these changes to all the identical passages in the whole project. Also, we wouldn’t have to look for the same problem twice, if we find it again in different files.

I have processed 4b and 4c so far and found some inconsitencies and three character limitation problems. Your spreadsheet idea is fab as it sharpens the view for issues that are likely to occur in all the files.

The thing is I am not sure we can do this for all files as there is hardly enough time to do so (that’s at least what I assume). However, this would mize issues and inconsistencies and maximize our chances for BOI and potentially following projects so we should go ahead with your idea.

said he could combine all the files to make global search easier. Having both a list of mistakes and all files combined, we could easily sort out everything by search and replace (even though we must make sure that everything remains conjugated correctly!!!)

I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be able to finish proofreading the four files you assigned me. I have been working for a few hours now and I am not even half way through the first file 7e. The process of checking every single term in the glossary is extremely slow and I can’t think of a way to make it faster.

I will also have to get in touch with once I am done with the first file as there are a lot of terms I need confirmation on after I had to shorten them or couldn’t find them in the glossary.

I have just finished proofreading file 7e. It took me nearly 8 hours. There are still a lot of terms in the glossary that are longer than 31 char. and others that had no corresponding entries in the glossary.

I created a word document with all the changes I made that might need confirmation. It is quite long. How do you want me to send it to you?

Also, you said I shouldn’t send the file to you straight away. Are there other changes you want me to make on that file?

I checked 7e, and since this is an item list, proofreading can be a long task to perform.

Do you use the “Replace” function? This might save a lot of time. If you do, please make sure to tick “Match case” under options. When replacing a term that is similar in English, highlight the translation column so that changes do not affect the English texT

Did the file require a lot of modifications? It looks like there should be a lot of pretranslation in there.

When do you think it could be completed?

I just reviewed your notes. Since you are using the glossary as reference, your suggestions are fine.

For segment 147, for example, you wrote that “Skywalk Boots” does not have en entry in the glossary, which is technically correct. But in the glossary, “Skywalk” is consistently translated as “voie celeste”, so you can safely assume that “Skywalk Boots” is “Bottes de voie celeste”.

When you cannot find a whole set of words in the glossary, search the different words separately to get a better idea of the translation to use.

if you cannot find a translation for any of the terms, send me your suggestions and I will help you.

Regarding the Replace function, it will save you time, but be careful not to change words that do not need to be replaced. For example, if you decide to replace “Arc” by “Arbalete”, tick the match case box under “Options” otherwise all the “arc” will become “arbalete” in the file. For example, “mARCher” will become “mARBALETEher”. I hope you get the picture.

For the character limitation, you should ask, he will probably be more helpful than me.

I finished proofreading file 7e (basically an item list) and had to shorten several terms or make decisions when there were no entries in the glossary.

So I created a word document with all the changes I made that might need confirmation. I uploaded it on the CS under the name Proofreading Final JD 7e and asked to have a look at it. He says it looks ok but that I should ask you about the abbreviations.

Could you check it to let me know if I can send it to ? Where should I upload it?

Also, recommended I use the glossary14May and I think and you mentioned another glossary. Is it alright if I carry on working with the 14May glossary?

I guess it would have been wiser if we had agreed on making the changes in the file directly, as the GS idea is only feasable if there is such a system and if there are more than one or two people working with it. Neither is the case.

Now we actually have to work on the same file twice as the corrections have not been incorporated yet.

I am really busy proofreading the next sections as Sunday is the deadline, so it would be great if you could change some of the files accordingly and upload them.

I would take file 5a and incorporate the changes.

During working on the glossary and rep files I’ve come across inconsistencies concerning the

very similar terms

Amulet

Charm

Talisman

I was wondering whether I can take it for granted that these terms really occur in the Game and not result from previous translation mistakes (translation into English).

said that all three terms are used but in different contexts. In the rep and glossary files I worked on I handled these terms systematically in the following way:

talisman- Talisman

amulet- Amulett

charm – Glucksbringer

I think these terms should be kept consistent in one way or other throughout the whole project.

I am not familiar with any problem with your files and as such I’m forwarding your mail to .

I check files really quick for misalignment, untranslated sections, and tag mistakes. Yours aren’t perfect, but still normal. I can’t even remember any details because normal files get forgotten right away.

The files then get forwarded to proofreaders.

Since I don’t remember any problem with the data structure of your translation, if there’s any problem it must be with the actual translation. Maybe a proofreader feels you made too many conjugation errors, or does not follow the client’s capitalisation request, I don’t know.

The proofreaders make reports on every file they read and ‘s the one who reads them all. So I’m asking about it.

There’s also the possibility that it’s your actual proofreading that’s the problem. But as I recall you only proofread 1 file, and that’s a duplication due to my mistake.

Not that there’s any file to translate yet. moved to another country, and this delayed things a lot.

Translation:

As long as the meaning is simple and the sentence structure is identical in French, the translation is decent. When the text becomes more complicated, the translation becomes confusing or makes no sense.

The translator does not seem to have a good enough knowledge of English to understand the English text. The meaning of some segments has nothing to do with the original text.

Too many terms were not translated according to the glossary, creating numerous inconsistencies.

Many segments were left untranslated but marked as translated.

There is a tendency to literal translation, the text often lacks fluency.

Grammar:

There are too many spelling errors, they could have been avoided with a spellcheck.

Plural agreements were regularly missing for glossary terms.

There were many occurrences of misconjugated verbs.

Grammar agreements: plural and feminine agreements omitted.

Punctuation:

Some final punctuation was missing.

Place names were sometimes not capitalized.

The translation is bad. The translator struggled with the meaning of the text. The translation of some segments had nothing to do with the English text. There were also many spelling/grammar errors and the translator frequently forgot to apply the guidelines.

My suggestion would be to proofread very carefully the file after completing the translation, may-be to proofread it even more then once. It increases greatly the quality. Also copying the text to Word and spellchecking adds to the overall impression. I would also suggest to reduce speed for the sake of quality, checking well each segment for meaning, punctuation and only then passing to the next. Speed is good, but quality is much more important.

Now there are new guidelines for this project about to be published today or tomorrow, please make sure to read them throughly and understand them before you take files for this project.

I think the google spreadsheet is a good way to share our thoughts on (dictionary) terms. During proofreading I’ve come across some terminology issues and a google spreadsheet would be fantastic for having other opinions on this (instead of uploading doc-files all the time)

I think as long as the spreadsheet follows a certain logic and does not become confusing it could be of great help.

I went through the whole glossary dictionary file again and made some changes in order to make everything even more consistent.

Just relaized that the file I just sent has the same name as the file I sent previously. Hope you can keep them apart.

So, now only 01_G and 05_G are left. I should manage them until Sunday at the latest.

I have a few comments regarding consistency.

In the file 02_Glossary, you translated greavese by jambierese. I used grevese so far because to me, jambierese can be either a piece of clothing or a piece of armour, while grevese is solely used as a reference to a piece of armour.

In other files, Tree of Lifee was translated by Arbre-Mondee, while you chose Arbre du Mondee. I think Arbre du Mondee sounds better.

Celebeame was translated by Faisceau Celestee in other files, and you chose Rayon Celestee, which sounds more appropriate.

You translated Bashe by Coupe, while I used Commotione. This is the name of a skill, and I think it might be better to use something stronger than coupe.

So far, I used Assassine to translate Slayere, but you chose Tueure.

In some files, Maguse was translated by Maguse, in others, by Magee.

I think pointstrikee was translated by coup de pointe in some files. Your translation ¢‚¬œ coup ciblee ¢‚¬œ seems more accurate.

Instancee was sometimes translated by exemplee, circonstancee or instancee. I do not think instancee is appropriate, so -depending on the context ¢‚¬œ exemplee or circonstancee should be favored.

You had two different translations for Moremoorse, Morimoruse and Morimortuse. I assumed the latter had a typo and retained the former.

Since you are in charge of these issues, this is your call. I did not modify any of the above ¢‚¬œ unless stated ¢‚¬œ so you will have to decide which terms to retain.

Anyway, please let me know which terms you would rather use so that we do not create unnecessary consistency issues.

Yes indeed, I received and read the notes on the very first file (13n) I translated, but I’ve translated many since and have no idea what’s wrong with those…

I proofread the next ones (I had a huge problem with transit while I was working on the first file and finally installed the software on another computer and since then it worked normally for the next files) them and copied them in word for the spelling and I haven’t read any remarks on the other files I translated since the first one.

Please tell me if there is something wrong with all the other files I translated except for 13n.

Are the new instructions already available?

Yes, the smaller dictionary file is the more recent and up-to-date one!

As for names and places, I sent it again as I had to do some changes (I think I labeled the file revised)

All changes made are reflected in the dictionary.

Do you think it is possible to send you the whole batch of files in one run (and to take the other files from the online server in the meantime)?

There are a few terms I’d like to check in all files again, if possible (really minor issues).

Thank you for the feedback. Here are a few details about the choices I made:

- Regarding “jambieres” I considered “greves” too but I assumed that jambieres was more accurate precisely because we are dealing with armor parts. Besides, I think “jambieres” might be easier to understand for the players who will probably be pretty young.

- The “Tree of Life” thing sounds odd to me, I think I would have translated it as “Arbre de Vie” there might be an issue somewhere or the translation might have been already there and I just fixed it to make it sound better (Arbre-Monde – Arbre du Monde)

- Regarding “Bash” I agree, something stronger than “coup” could be more appropriate. If there wasn’t any context surrounding it, I probably went with “Coup” because it’s short, therefore it eases the process of keeping translations within the 31 character limits.

- Same thing for “Slayer”, I went with “Tueur” to keep it simple and, more importantly, short. We can change it if needed. We just need to make sure that “Assassin” for instance isn’t used elsewhere.

- “Instance” was and is still a real issue. I did some research and it turns out Instance is a technical term here. Let me try to explain what it refers to.

Every player/group of player wants to explore the dungeon, slay the monsters and rescue the princess in the game. However, since there is only a limited amount of dungeons in the game, and thus a limited amount of monsters to slay, and princess to save, the programmers had to find a way to make these tasks available to everyone.

Whenever a player/group of player enter a dungeon, the game creates a “copy” of the dungeon exclusively for these players. Hence they can explore the whole dungeon without being disturbed by other groups of players.

This process of creating “parallel areas” is called “Instancing”. Despite my research, I haven’t found any French word for this. As far as I know, the term “Instance” is used in French too to describe this process. If you find a more appropriate term though, please let me know. I have a lot of work to catch up on so I couldn’t spend too much time researching this.

- Yes, Morimortus was a typo, thanks for correcting it. “Moremoors” is the name of a scorpion boss so I came up with Mori (dead(s) in Latine) and morus (a scorpion species I think). I htought it would fit here.

Okay, since I am still proofreading files as I write this message, the easier solution might be to keep all these remarks somewhere and, once the glossary is completed, we will do the necessary fixes before inserting the terms in the other files.

The correct person to ask is actually . I check incoming files for alignment and untranslated words, and if I have the time, spot-check the tags. I then forward them to the proofreaders. The proofreaders correct the translation if necessary, but either way the report is passed to . So she knows the details.

I do notice that your 4d has 208 words untranslated and had to take over the file.

To complicate matters, the French side’s situation is so bad that it threatens the German side.

Basically, we didn’t have enough people in the French group and had to make do with new untested people. A few of the new people worked okay, but quite a bit more are crap. This in turn caused the client to get angry at us in general, regardless of the language.

3. Use an Excel macro to go through the files and search for certain terms and replace it with the same term but with the proper capitalisation.

However, your input on how to best do bring the quality of our translation project up will be much appreciated. We aren’t above scrapping the above methods if you have something better in mind.

Yes, that’s probably our best course of action.

JM and I have already started working on the files. I told him I was working on section 16 but I don’t know which files he picked. Once he gets back to me I’ll inform the other proofreaders of the available files.

Like I said to numerous times, I think the capitalization thing is a lost cause. Even with the time extension, the search and replace method won’t work because of the many discrepancies there are. Plus I strongly doubt we will have enough time to review the entire project to correct all consistency issues.

As far as I can tell, all area names like “IncenseValley” or “Doom Bog” for instance have been capitalized in French too, as well as the game interface and commands. So even if the translations are not 100% consistent with the glossary, at least we have this covered.

If we start changing the caps now for all items in the files, we risk ending up with a half done job which would be worse than the current situation. Again, this is something that should have been decided at the beginning of the project, not now that it’s almost complete. We cannot possibly be liable for the sudden change of mind of the client.

If the client still wants us to do it though, even if we get an additional delay, I think it would be wise to check with about the costs of such an operation. I can already tell this is going to be extremely expensive and time consuming. The search and replace thing is also a very risky bet since the smallest mistake could alter thousands of words across the whole project which would be almost impossible to fix.

Please discuss this seriously with because whatever you guys decide, we will need to know as soon as possible since we have already started with the proofreading.

I think it would be best if you took care of the file distribution yourself. This way you’re on top of things and you can actually make sure that we don’t forget anything. I fear I will be in complete chaos if I have to deal with this in addition to the language issues and the side questions.

So far, JM is taking care of section 14 and I’m taking care of section 16.

I thought could deal with section 9 since she’s already done some of it previously. You can assign some files to too, I don’t know what is her capacity or availability.

I will send them both some instructions regarding how to proceed with the proofreading and provide them with the final excel glossary if they don’t have it already.

Since this is the fine tuning of the project it’s probably best to rely only on the cream of the crop. As far as the proofreading goes it might be good to keep it between the proofreaders mentioned since we are sure about the quality of their work.

In the meantime, I just wanted to send you some specific instructions regarding these next assignments.

We have decided to proofread the files in Excel format directly this time. This means we won’t have access to the Termstar Dictionary and we won’t be able to insert terms directly.

Instead, we will be using the complete glossary in Excel format. The entire success of this final proofreading is based on consistency between all of us proofreaders. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you refer to the glossary at all times.

Even if you think you already know the translation of a specific term check the glossary. There are lots of translations in there that were added/changed only at the last minute.

Also, we won’t have time to fix this glossary so even if you notice a translation that could be improved or is downright wrong, use it nonetheless. This is our last chance to improve the overall consistency so we have to follow this blindly.

Finally, item names should be in LOWER CASE. Do not follow the same pattern as BOI. Just capitalize character names and area names (Bilu, Vallee de l’Encens, Marais Maudit, Shaw Danon, etc.) but leave the items in lower case (You found a Fire Sword – Vous avez trouve une epee de feu).

I am currently tackling section 14. In file 14f, there are red boxes marked “Please check on plus”. There are usually strings of signs in the French translation box. Should I do anything about that ?

The French BoI project is delayed since (lead translator) moved to another country. We have tried to work around him and got as far as having 5 files translated, but finally hit a bottleneck where we need his expertise to finalise the glossary. We need the glossary so common terms are translated the same way throughout the whole project.

I want first to sums the story so that you can judge by yourself, first I received a message from you where you say that I¢‚¬„¢ll be assigned a file of 18000 words or something like this, the same day I received instructions from with name of the file, I downloaded the file and found that it¢‚¬„¢s more than 3000 words so I thought that you decided to send a bigger file and that’s all, no one at any moment said about translating half of the file, it’s only after I read your last message that I went on the spreadsheet and find out that there¢‚¬„¢s a small note in the very lower part of the page about which segments to translatee¦ I can understand that such things happens on a project of that volume, so it¢‚¬„¢s really ok for this time, just because we¢‚¬„¢re going to work for a long moment together I would like if the instructions about such cases would be more precise a bit, it’s normal that such misunderstandings happens but it cost me a lot of time and energy (cause I’m almost done with the complete file)..

Here is a thought that emerged from my discussion with yesterday:

Do you think it would be better to use a Google spreadsheet or .xls files for the translators to send you their comments on dictionary terms?

offered to set us up with what we need in this respect when I discussed this with him. But I am not sure if that would be better: I find that the Google spreadsheet is slow, and it may be hard for you to keep track of comments in an .xls file, and easier just to process a list.

On the other hand, maybe some processes could be automated in an .xls list (like re-importing changed entries into Transit), but I am not sure how all this works, so this is just a thought.

Is it a term in Items_reduced?

Everything in Items_reduced will go into the glossary. Now, Transit is not smart enough to recognize partials, so it can’t derive “Land of the Dead” from “Key to the Land of the Dead”. But a lot of those other terms are in other files which we will include to the glossary.

Also, I don’t know how to do an add glossary yet, especially without an actual glossary to begin with.

If the new terms aren’t in Items_reduced already, perhaps send me an excel file for now.

Having looked at the Excel files the game really does use these three terms. If I recall correctly, in dialogue there terms are pretty much interchangeable, but as far as item names goes, equipments are usually Amulet, sometimes Charm, but never Talisman. Quest items and single-use items could be anything though.

We do not have a fluent Chinese speaker in our team to check the original game and see whether the inconsistencies are in the original Chinese or a translation error.

I have already checked the BOI website but could not find any useful information. Can you think of a way to find out about this?

Those three words are synonyms, referring to a small object worn/kept for its magical/spiritual (protective) quality. I believe that as long as we refer to an object consistently, we can get away with any single one of them. E.g., we can have an Amulet of Thor and a Spirit Charm, but not an Amulet of Thor and a Charm of Thor at the same time.

Have you checked the BoI Items list Excel file?

Nature of assigment: Polish up the Proper Names files in line with the Main Glossary and the Instructions.

Assignment completed as stated, updating the terms, and removing elements from the previous outdated translation memory and unnecessary capital letters.

Time spent on the file: 8 hours

Hourly rate: $12

Spell-checking and proofreading on Files 15o, 15n, 18l, and completion of spell-checking on File 18i:

Quality Report:

1b had mostly to do with proper names and the main issue was to update the translation, so it was not quite challenging as such.

However, from the last four (4) files, only 18i was already quite satisfactory in terms of quality, and all we did was to complete the spell-checking and solve the issues already defined by PM. 150, 15n, and 18l had a lot of spell-checking and proofreading work. Apart from a good amount of glossary terms consistently misspelled some of the segments still had considerable untranslated (English) stuff, which we translated and proofread within the set deadlines, even though we still felt the necessity of a last proofreading touch, particularly on 15n, by the time we had to upload files for time constraints.

All four (4) files completed in 13 hours

Hourly rate: $12

TOTAL: 8 X 12 + 13X 12 = 96 + 156 = $252 for five files proofread.

To make sure I am not mistaken this time, I would like to ask you how to capitalize some of these segments.

‘Additional function’ is to be translated: ‘Fonction Supplementaire’ or ‘Fonction supplementaire’?

‘Poison Resistance’ is to be translated: ‘Resistance au poison’ or Resistance Au Poison’? (Do words like ‘de’, ‘au’, ‘de la’ take capital letters too, as the message says every ‘word’ or should only the ‘nouns’ take them?)

These are the kind of segments that I am finding hard to decide whether there are part of the ‘action, item, name, place’ group that requires capital letters to every word.

Why is the capitalization different in ‘Change Fire Attack Rate’ and in ‘Change weapon attribute’? I would have thought these segments were both actions and would therefore need capital letters to each word.

There is also ‘Status resistance Rate’. Why doesn’t resistance take a capital letter, and does it still take one in French?

Should I assume that if the English word doesn’t have a capital letter, then the French translation shouldn’t either?

I am sorry to bother you again with those capitalization issues but I am trying my best to do this job right.

Just keep it simple and don’t overthink it because of the random guidelines (I am about to contact about this).

***For all resistances, we use a standardized terminology similar to the previous project’s. Here is a bunch of them, just off the top of my head:

Res. Poison

Res. Lenteur (Slow)

Res. Etourdir (Stun)

Res. Sommeil (Sleep)

Res. Gel (Freeze)

Res. Affaiblir (Weaken)

Just follow this pattern (without the terms in brackets of course) and you should be fine.

You can use “Resistance” instead of “Res.” if you have enough room but don’t bother with articles (Resistance au/de/a /etc.) it’s best to keep it simple so everyone can remember it.

***Terms are capitalized differently because the quality isn’t that great overall. If you worked on Jade Dynasty, surely you must know what I mean about the source text quality.

In these instances, just follow your guts and check the surrounding segments to figure out the best approach.

***No, not ALL words should take caps. Just capitalize the important words, ie. not the articles. We are already mocking the French language rules by accepting the client’s request to capitalize random nouns, it’s best not to push it too far.

Anyways, just try to keep the whole thing consistent, you don’t have to mirror the English text blindly if you notice an obvious variation, may it be the capital letters or a glossary issue.

Don’t worry, I will proofread one of your file soon and I will make sure to inform you if something’s not right. In the meantime, just trust your judgement and I’m sure you will be fine.

There is. It’s because I’m stupid and loaded the German translation as French, which of course did not get included when I later told Transit to include the German dictionary.

Here is the report, which is for the proofreading of File 2b (French):

The total amount of time I spent on this was 5 hours. There was 1 hour 30 minutes of proofreading, and 3 hours 30 minutes of translating Untranslated text and then proofreading that. The quality of the translation was fairly decent, but large parts of the file were not translated. The proofreading itself was more time-consuming than it should have been, as the Glossary I was pointed to was in fact two Excel files (this was before the Glossary had been updated in a more convenient format). There was also the occasional inconsistency within the Glossary itself ¢‚¬œfor instance, the expression tage was sometimes translated as etiquette de e¦ e, and sometimes as marque de e¦e.

I think wanted me to send you this message concerning my proofreading report I had uploaded as a zip file to the communication system accessible via the server. As I cannot attach a file pleas find my (very short) proofreading repor belowt:

On Tue, 04. May 2010, I was assigned 5 files to be proofread, that is, my job would have been to just make sure the proofreaders had not forgotten to delete the +e signs and to fix one issue in one segment of file p, I think it was. These were the file names:

German_JD_100201_Localize_Vetted_Ales_O_8p,q,r,s, and t.

hours worked during proofreading were 3 hours at a price of $5 each.

So the cost for proofreding would add up to $15.

Comments:

Although the files were supposed to be perfect, except for possible superfluous plus signs, a simple spell check resulted in numerous orthographical and grammar mistakes in most of the files.

Eliminating these and staying in touch with thus took me three hours on that evening.

I do not know, whether the proofreaders had done an awful job or whether the files had been corrupted after the proofreading, e.g. by terminology from a dictionary that was inserted belatedly. I remember one issue in particular that seems to point to the second possibility. In one of the segments, there appeard the German tern unlogische, which means illogicale. However, it appeared as unAuftragsbuchische, so Transit must have inserted the term Auftragsbuche (English: log”) from a dictionary into the German word. It is almost impossible for a proofreader not to see this, so I think it happened afterwards.

I am not sure if I chose the best approach with my last file, so I just discussed it with and we decided I should discuss it directly with you.

I just uploaded that file and my comments, but here is a short explanation:

The file was basically a long list of stings that were already in the dictionary, some of them phrases of a few words length. The dictionary was included directly in the file (by). I was told to apply the pretranslated strings, and then translate the rest, but I was also told to check the pretranslated items for conjugation, context etc..

As it turned out, I found quite a long list of dictionary terms that I wasn’t so happy with. I hope my comments are comprehensible, with so many terms I couldn’t take the time to explain everything in detail.

The problem is, I couldn’t just change the segments I took issue with, because you, as the present lead translator, should decide about them, and they also need to be changed in the dictionary, if you agree that they need to be changed (of course, I may be wrong about some terms, but some, I think, are quite important). So instead, I made this list with suggestions.

What do you think of this approach? Of course, this means that (a) it took me a long time to do it, and (b) proofreading and fixing things may be slow for you. But I didn’t really see another way of dealing with it.

And as I understand it, we should make sure we have the best dictionary we can get before translating the whole rest of the project – it will be hard to keep it consistent if we decide to change some terms later.

So I hope we can discuss this together.

I don’t actually need to know what changes, nor do I have the expertise to judge them anyway. I just need to know when to update the file(s).

As can be found in the new guidelines, the fact that there is a

genitive s in the source does not always mean it has to be tranlated that

way (e.g.: Master’s Boots can acceptably be translated as Meister-Stiefel).

Of course, Stiefel des Meisters is also possible and may sound better in

some instances.

I even think with more generic terms “Meister-Stiefel” is better. “Stiefel des Meisters” might imply that there is only one “Meister” (which we don’t know). But in the case of “Katakomben der Kunigin” it is clear that it is the specific catacombs of a specific queen.

Still, it might not be feasible to have a hard rule about this. Later in my file, I had NPC’s titles such as Thor’s Servant, that I translated as “Diener des Thor”. Again, I think this looks nicer (although Thor-Diener would not be too bad), but I also translated many things as Noun-Noun-Noun in other parts in the file.

So, it really depends on the specific situation. However, I have the impression that some translators never use the genitive construction. Maybe we could at least leave it open to everybody to make a choice. Or even encourage them to make a conscious choice.

As already stated, brevity was initially a concern for building such

proper name and that it must therefore be a definite, singular place, item

In case we do not face such restrictive rules concerning that, would you

agree that we could open this up and leave it to the translators? In that

case, translators would be free to use “Waldland-Gebirge” along with

“Gebirge des Waldlands” (and so on), making the job a bit harder on

proofreaders. Of course, it would be the translator’s responsibility to

make ABSOLUTELY sure that both versions cannot be mixed up with any other

proper name and are singular and definitive. We could use only one version

in the dictionary, but if the translator felt they needed to change it in

their context, they would be free to do so.

I even think we should only use one version of a term. So if “Waldland-Gebirge” is in the glossary, it should be used unless there are major stylistic reasons to make an exception. Otherwise we may just confuse the player. But I think we should also allow that some terms (like Tempel des Krebses) are in the glossary in THAT form, and consistently used so.

So, I was a bit too enthusiastic about my genitive constructions, but I do think they are much better for some terms, so I hope we will be able to decide on a case-by-case basis.

My file will be done tomorrow, and I will just leave the terms as I have deemed best in each case (but I will also consider the case of “Waldland-Gebirge”), and then I guess I will see whether you agree to them. This should be easier than coming up with a linguistic theory of when to use what form . But thanks for discussing it!

if you choose to download the dictionary file, make sure you back up your current Names_Places_Skills file. The dictionary is attached to the raw untranslated version of that file and if you overwrite it by accident you may lose your previous work.

Okay, let’s be so we understand each other. Why the attitude? If you have something at home interfering with work, the professional thing to do is to explain that you have some private stuff going and let us know that things are going to be late.

You have some 2500 words assigned on the 18th. It is now the 24th and you propose to finish it on the 25th evening. That’s a whole week for 2500 words. Unusually slow for you.

Next, sure, you did not ask for Items reduced, but when I assigned that file to you, you wrote back “Confirmed” within 45 minutes. If you did not want the work or were/are too busy for it, you should have declined back then.

Quit the attitude. You’re supposed to be a pro, so act like one.

I don’t know anyone who likes the Communication Sytem (what you’re using right now). The Ticket system is better, but I can’t use it to reach a specific person (the other guy has to initiate contact first). Also, if the other guy doesn’t set his profile so he gets notification when there’s a reply, then he won’t see anything until he logs back to that forum.

Unfortunately, the rules are indeed different so the translation will be a bit tricky.

For instance the mark of possession is defined as follows in French:

Masc.

General’s Sword – Epee du/de general

General’s Helmet – Casque du/de general

Fem.

Dryad’s Sword – Epee de/de la dryade

Dryad’s Helmet- Casque de/de la dryade

As you can see, there is at least one common article “de” that we could use to translate automatically all possession marks.

However, there could be exceptions :

Water sword – Epee de l’eau or Epee d’eau

This means that the translator of all the target nouns would have to keep in mind that “de” would be added at all times.

Also there might be other exceptions that I can’t think of right now.

A lot of the items in the game use the possessive to differentiate themselves from each other. E.g., Berzerker’s Helmet, Siv’s Blood, General’s Longsword.

I am uncertain how to efficiently handle it for the glossary.

Previously we just translate line by line, but it may be more effective to separate those lines into its component, getting Berzerker’s, Siv’s, General’s, and Helmet, Blood, and Longsword. I’m thinking that this will allow us to translate any combination of the component, speeding things up.

But English and French may have different rules regarding possessive. Would the above approach work?

Allright, about the glossary now.

When you don’t know whether or not a term should be kept under 31 characters, just take a look at the source text. If all the words Are In Caps Like This it means that it is a “proper name” like we call them here. Also, they will be under 31 characters in the source text too.

On the contrary, if the text is a full sentence or half of one, there should be no need to enforce the 31 character limit.

When you need to abbreviate, you can act freely providing you keep the same abbreviations all along. Try to keep everything as clear as possible so that there is no confusion for the players (e.g. Seigneur – Seign. or Seig. but not Sn or Si or Se, etc.)

If you have any doubts, do feel free to prepare a sample (copy and paste on a word document) and upload it in the CS (the interface from where you wrote this message). Then simply let me know that you sent me a sample (don’t forget to mention the file name) and I’ll get back to you.

I’ve started translating part of the glossary for BOI and I often come across that one problem: 31 characters limit.

As I’m not always sure which segments the limit actually applies to I did not try and shorten any of the translated terms. (It is hard to tell for some segments if they are long names or short instructions)

Are there any guidelines you could give me about how to shorten translated terms (do I even have to do it or do you like to wait and make global decisions about that once the glossary is close to complete in order to avoid inconsistencies?) or about how to decide if a noun is a proper noun (apart from the obvious ones) and therefore needs a capital letter? I’m thinking about terms like “scorpion” or “angel” which are common nouns (I didn’t put any capital letters to those so far) but seem to refer to more than that in the game context.

Most of the terms you want to add to the glossary should be In Caps Like This. Usually they are under 31 characters too.

We can always add some bits of sentences later if we find out that they are used consistently over the whole project (but I guess we already have the repetition files for that).

As for quick ways to deal with this, I’m afraid I don’t have any. Maybe a macro could help, if could automatically pick the capitalized words for instance.

Otherwise I think set up the last glossary by himself at the very beginning of the first project, so maybe he could give you some better advice.

regarding the genitiv ‘s. There is a problem with seperately translating those, because not all of these “‘s” refer to persons. For non-persons, we could simply substitute a hyphen, e.g.: Dragon’s Cave could be Drachen- and the other term Huhle. However, this will not work in a case like Ares’ Shield or Aphrodite’s Wish. However, it may be feasible to split these terms up and remove all the apostrophes (Ares’ becomes Ares and Aphrodite’s becomes Aphrodites), then translate them seperately and combine them again. However, this will not work without careful proofreading (and proofreading a list of such terms for errors is extremely tiring and demands utmost concentration). So I’m not sure if the trouble will be worth it.

Regarding sentences:

I would say we shouldn’t have ANY sentences in the glossary. The glossary shouldn’t do the translators’ job, in my opinion. However, I don’t really had any criteria to determine/filter if something was a sentence automatically but removed them manually from the glossary. The only way I did it was by length, which is not always a perfect criterion but helps reduce much of it. I guess you’re familiar with the Excel-formula =length()?

I do not agree with some of the choices the other translators have made, so I would like to discuss this with the lead translators ASAP, so that we can discuss it and decide

(a) I go ahead and translate according to my best opinion, OR

(b) to stick with what has already been done.

(a) will mean some of glossary 03 and 04 will need to be reviewed again. But that would be much better than sticking with what has already been done and having to fix many things later for the whole project.

I think now is the time to discuss it, as we can still implement some general ideas at this level, and the project may benefit. Of course, if the lead translator does not agree with my suggestions, I will accept his/her opinion.

Project Managers: Would it be ok if I communicate directly with the lead translator about this? If yes, could you tell me how to contact him/her?

All: Here is my concern:

As you know, the proper names files are full of noun compounds (noun+noun(+noun)) combinations, or adjective+noun combinations.

In the past, these have often been translated word by word and hyphenated. So, e.g.

“Devilhunter Gorge” becomes “Teufelsjager-Schlucht”.

In some cases (like the above) this is fine. In other cases, it doesn’t sound right to me:

“Queen’s Catacomb” – “Kunigin-Gruft” (this was used by one translator). In this case, I would prefer “Gruft der Kunigin”, i.e., a Genitive Construction (note that in this case, the original is a genitive, too!).

Another example isTemplesnamed for zodiac signs, like “VirgoTemple”. Again, I would prefer “Tempel der Jungfrau”, but not “Jungfrau-Tempel”. While this would sound ok, think of “Fische-Tempel” or “Waage-Tempel”. I thik “Tempel der Fische” or “Tempel der Waage” makes it much easier to recognize for the player that this is about zodiac signs, and not about actual fishes or scales.

Thus, I would like to change some, but not all, of the Noun-Noun combinations to Noun1 der/des Noun2 (the equivalent structure in English would be: “Noun1 of Noun2″ instead of “Noun1 Noun2″.

This is even more so the case with 3 word combinations (Noun+Noun+Noun). Again, examples:

KufuDesertDepths – Kufu-Wusten-Tiefen – Tiefen der Kufu-Wuste.

Scorpion King’s Crypt – Skorpionenkunigs-Gruft – Gruft des Skorpionen-Kunigs.

Again, I think genitive constructions greatly improve readability, and also fit much better with the medieval or epic atmosphere that we also try to achieve when using the medieval formal.

So I suggest:

1. That I would like to translate my list of names and items according to the ideas expressed above

2. That these will be reviewed by proofreaders/lead translators, and applied to the other files if found fitting (otherwise, my version needs to be changed to fit with the other file).

3. That the ideas expressed above will also be added to the guidelines to the project as a general strategy to consider when translating newer Noun Compounds. Of course, it wouldn’t make sense if I were the only one doing it this way.

Note: There are not too many words at this stage that would need to be changed, e.g. the zodiac sign temples haven’t yet been translated (to my knowledge). So this is also a question about: Whether we consciously want to adopt the Nound Compounds Strategy that I have suggested.

Please tell me what you think. I find this very important, which is why I took the time to write this mail (for which I expect I won’t be paid extra). But of course, it is not up to me to decide what is feasible for this project, so I’m open to discussing it.

I cannot fully agree with you on this “easier to recognize”-argument here. To me, it is equally clear or unclear that this is about zodiacs, no matter if it is Krebs-Tempel or Tempel des Krebses. Still, I see your point of improving the look and feel of the terms.

As already stated, brevity was initially a concern for building such terms. Also, there is absolutely no doubt that Kufu-Wusten-Tiefen is a proper name and that it must therefore be a definite, singular place, item or name.

The following is a bit contrived, but it may give you an idea why in some instances the “uglier” hyphenated version also was chosen to prevent ambiguity:

Imagine there are various mountain ranges in an area, say in the “Woodland” (Woodlandbeing the proper name of the region). Imagine one of these is calledWoodland’s Mountains. Following your logic, this would have to be translated as: Gebirge des Waldlands. Thus, the player may be confused as to which mountain range of the Woodland is meant here if they have no other means of determining whether Gebirge is part of the proper name or a regular expression (unlike in the English source, where capitalization is an indicator of that). So, Waldland-Gebirge would be unambiguous. Again, this is very contrived, but I hope you see my point.

Still, this is not to say we cannot change the rules on this. I’m still waiting on to send me definite info on character/word/proper names length limits, which will be the main determinant of the further procedure.

In case we do not face such restrictive rules concerning that, would you agree that we could open this up and leave it to the translators? In that case, translators would be free to use “Waldland-Gebirge” along with “Gebirge des Waldlands” (and so on), making the job a bit harder on proofreaders. Of course, it would be the translator’s responsibility to make ABSOLUTELY sure that both versions cannot be mixed up with any other proper name and are singular and definitive. We could use only one version in the dictionary, but if the translator felt they needed to change it in their context, they would be free to do so.

So I suggest:

1. That I would like to translate my list of names and items according to the ideas expressed above

2. That these will be reviewed by proofreaders/lead translators, and applied to the other files if found fitting (otherwise, my version needs to be changed to fit with the other file).

If you are asked to work by the hour, how much will you charge? Multiply that by the amount of time you actually spent fixing the misalignment, and charge that much.

What is the reasoning behind NOT using hyphens here? Please explain to me.

As far as I am concerned, we could agree on a rule that game-technical terms (those which will not normally appear in in-game spoken texts) need not be hyphenated, as there will probably be fewer problematic terms such as Vim Skill (Vimfahigkeit is far from being a German word, but Vim-Fahigkeit is absolutely acceptable). Otherwise I strongly recommend (for standardization and consistency) using hyphens according to the above rule.

Furthermore, Movement Speed may refer to Fortbewegung, but until you have checked that in the game and confirmed it, please try to use a more general translation (I assume this refers rather to in-combat movement speed than to run speed, but I don’t know either yet, so Bewegungs-Geschwindigkeit would be the safe translation as opposed to Fortbewegungstempo).

Please tell me your thoughts on this.

Consistency: Ice Resistance and Physical Resistance (also, e.g. attributes, translated as Eigenschaften and as Attribute, among other such examples) most probably refer to the same set of skills/attributes. Therefore, they MUST be translated consistently: Eisbestandigkeit and Physische Resistenz is NOT acceptable. Here, I would plead for Widerstand: Eis-Widerstand, Kurperlicher Widerstand, but at least it has to be the same term. Please state your thoughts.

Accuracy: Critstrike has been translated as Kritischer Schaden, while Critstrike Damage has also been translated that way. They are certainly not the same, so please try to be as accurate as possible. In the last game we decided on leaving such game-technical, made-up terms in English, if there is only a distorting German term (such as Kritschlag). We can of course discuss this, but it needs to be consistent and meaningful.

Other accuracy issues:

Herb of Light should be Licht-Kraut or Kraut des Lichts, but not Licht-Krauter

Fountain of Healing is possibly better translated as Heilungs-Brunnen, or Brunnen der Heilung than Heil-Brunnen, while Fountain of Mana refers to mana as a term for in-game power (common in many video games), so Brunnen von Mana is not as accurate as Mana-Brunnen.

Grundlegend is rarely an accurate translation for Basic when referring to concrete items, “einfach” or “Basis-” is probably better.

This is not to criticize your work but to try and achieve the highest possible quality and consistency as early in the project as possible, because this will help all of us making less avoidable mistakes and take a great load of the proofreading budget. This message goes to all three translators who have worked on the glossary, so not all of the above may apply to you.

Very good to know. I wasn’t aware of this distinction, so my strategy so far was to hyphenate as much as possible (even Hellbeast – Hullen-Bestie). None of the terms you mention here were translated by me (I think), but I will keep this in mind for the future.

As far as I am concerned, we could agree on a rule that game-technical terms

(those which will not normally appear in in-game spoken texts) need not be

hyphenated, as there will probably be fewer problematic terms such as Vim

Skill (Vimfahigkeit is far from being a German word, but Vim-Fahigkeit is

absolutely acceptable).

I think hyphenation should be used for all noun+noun combinations, even technical terms such as Vim-Fahigkeit, unless they are common German words (e.g. I remember translating Snow Bear as “Schneebar”. Even if this isn’t a real German word, it is close enough to “Eisbar” to be acceptable, I think).

Even if we hyphenate more often than is *required* by german spelling rules, it will be easier to read for the player (at a glance), and consistent with the rest of the game. Long words composed of multiple nouns can be very difficult to read, especially on screen.

I guess a bit of analytic/theoretical thinking could also be useful here: Vim-Fahigkeit contains two different concepts that are both important: “Vim”, as opposed to other factions, and “Fahigkeit”, as a game-mechanical concept.

But a fantasy name like “Schneebar” is acceptable, in my opinion: it is a type of animal, but neither the snow-part nor the bear-part are important enough to be emphasized by way of separating and capitalizing them. Unless there are also Eis-Baren and Frost-Baren: In this case, one should use Schnee-Bar, to differentiate the different types of bears.

Just a few thoughts. This may be too complicated to be an “official guideline” for the project.

NOT acceptable. Here, I would plead for Widerstand: Eis-Widerstand

Kurperlicher Widerstand, but at least it has to be the same term. Please

state your thoughts.

I used “Kurperlich” for “Physical”, because I found it fitting in light of the dichotomy between Physical and Magical that I inferred from my portion. I think it is a much better choice than “Physisch”.

“Widerstand” was used in the last project, so I think we should stick with it, although personally, I like “Resistenz” better.

Accuracy: Critstrike has been translated as Kritischer Schaden, while

Critstrike Damage has also been translated that way. They are certainly not

the same, so please try to be as accurate as possible. In the last game we

decided on leaving such game-technical, made-up terms in English, if there

is only a distorting German term (such as Kritschlag). We can of course

discuss this, but it needs to be consistent and meaningful.

I suggest leaving Critstrike in English (as a technical term), but obviosly, Damage is Schaden. So “Critstrike”, and “Critstrike-Schaden” (with a hyphen ) OR “Kritischer Schaden”. But NOT “Kritschlag”.

I had multiple terms with Basic, Medium, Advanced, Super OR Supreme. I am not sure whether they all belong to the same scale, but we should nevertheless translate them consistently. My suggestion is

Basic = Einfach

Medium = Mittel

Advanced = Besser (NOT Fortgeschritten!!!)

Super = difficult. I left it as “Super” so far, although I find that anti-atmospheric.

Supreme = I translated this as “Edel” at least once, which is a very free translation, but there is no satisfactory direct translation (i.e. an adjective) which I am aware of(?).

This is not to criticize your work but to try and achieve the highest

possible quality and consistency as early in the project as possible

because this will help all of us making less avoidable mistakes and take a

great load of the proofreading budget. This message goes to all three

translators who have worked on the glossary, so not all of the above may

apply to you.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this and discuss it. I joined the last project only after the glossary stage, and many things have never been so carefully discussed (not that I am aware of, and I DID read the instruction files). When trying to find the best translations for important terms, I was often confused, and had to search and guess a lot. So I guess my translations were acceptable most of the time, but it is hard to imagine that everything was perfect. So please continue to send feedback!

I also think a list with the most important game terms (skills, attributes, combat-related values etc.), compiled seperately, might help everybody to be aware of the few dozen terms that must not, under ANY circumstances, be translated inconsistently.

I am proofreading the glossary translation and have come across a few issues I would like to adress with you.

Firstly, I would like to ask you about hyphenation: in the guidelines to the previous project, we agreed to hyphenate the following:

Hellish Beast becomes Hullische Bestie

Hell Beast becomes Hullen-Bestie (not Hullenbestie)

Hellbeast becomes Hullenbestie (not Hullen-Bestie).

Likewise, we translated things like Celeplume as Himmelfeder, whereas Celestial Plume would become EITHER Himmlische Feder OR Himmels-Feder but NEVER Himmelsfeder

In the BOI-glossary (the new one) I find lots of deviations from this simple building rule:

First of all, thanks for your thoughts on my translation. I think this will definitely help me to improve and to avoid mistakes in the future.

As for hyphenation, the rule you mentioned makes sense to me especially with regard to consistency. Unfortunately the agreement on this rule never reached me. So far I have almost always used hyphens for compound nouns. I only skipped the hyphen when the word looked more natural without than with a hyhen (as in Himmelsfeder).

I’ll stick to this rule in future translations and I think that this will make things less difficult.

I have spent a lot of time playing this game to gain a deeper understanding of the game and I must agree with your suggestions (Begewgungstempo, Mana-Brunnen)

As far as consistency is concerned, it is sometimes difficult to stick with one translation of a term that has dozens especially with compound nouns where one translation might be more appropriate in one linguistic context but not in another. However, I see how important it is to keep consistent with terminology to maintain full comprehension and logic. Hence, I’ll try to focus on that rather than absolute lingusitsic appropriateness.

This is of course especially difficult with words/phrases that are difficult to translate as Critstrike/Critstrike Damage. Maybe one could leave Critsrtike as it is and would have a term like Critstrike-Schaden then, which is consistent and plausible.

As for accuracy, the singular-plural-mixup was of course my mistake and absolutely avoidable! I also agree with your translation of ‘basic’.

With Heil-Brunnen and Heilungs-Brunnen I would still opt for the former as it sounds more German I think.

As I said, your thoughts were very helpful and will help me avoid these issues in future translations to keep the standard as high as possible.

As far as I’m concerned, I’d like to say the following:

I hyphenated most noun-noun compounds, I admit sometimes I used compounds like, I can’t think of a good example right now, something like Himmelsfeder, because the hyphenated version seemed to be ugly and ridiculous. But you are right I will hyphenate all noun-noun compounds in the future. But I will not use hyphens for adjective-noun compounds like Hullische Bestie, I think a hyphen would not be acceptable in these cases.

Consistency: I used the word Widerstand for Resistance, it seems the best translation.

Accuracy: I used Critstrike and translated basic by einfach

I just uploaded section 3. I left a few ‚« + ‚» in the text to mark terms I was unsure of. Some of the English words seemed to be the contraction of two words that I could not always recognize for sure ( Gleameade, Magiclighteade, Holylighteade, CelCrystale, Fantseae).

For these, the translation should be okay, but somebody else might have a better idea.

There are also a few terms I am really unsure about and some terms that were so abbreviated due to the 31-character limitation that I want to be sure still make sense to other people.

Altogether, there are about 12 +e signs.

This is nothing major, but it might be wise to have somebody look into that to avoid errors and inconsistencies later in the project.

The list will be useful, yes. As for time, well, all of the files are in Excel format since last week. We’ve been using the extra time to improve the quality of the translation, replacing older Excel files with new finalised ones.

It’s actually impossible to proofread everything given our lack of people, and even now I predict there’ll be files coming until the last moment.

This doesn’t mean you should make the list. There’s no reason why the list can’t be applied on the files we have now (proofed or otherwise), and for those that deliberately chose not to proof, the list would lessen the possibility of errors.

This is not much, but this is all I can think of right now. All these terms should be searched in the French section only (obviously) and can be replaced safely without compromising other words.

I will inform about this so that she can provide you with the list of abbreviations which is a bit more thorough. Be careful with the abbrev. list though since some terms might be part of other terms, like “fee” could be part of “coffee” for instance. This is why I have entered spaces in the fix list.

Instead, can you be on stand-by? Vettors run into untranslated segments sometimes, even in proofread files. Perhaps it was skipped accidentally, or neglected, who knows. Normally we just turn back and tell the translator, “Hey, you forgot something.” But this is the last day and there’s no time for that back-and-forth. We need someone who can translate on the spot.

I started working on section 4 and I realized that the terms in file 4a are inconsistent with the latest glossary. All the words have been capitalized too.

Checking the segments one by ine against the glossary will be too time consuming, I will not be able to take care of this section.

Please spellcheck and abbreviate the yellow cells (ignore if the cell is some sentence, only proper names, which are with capital letters are important).

To make the abbreviation process easier, I pasted in each file in cell C1 another macro, which shows the number of the characters in the cell in column B. You need to drag it or paste it in column C next to the cell you are checking.

And finally, I am attaching the 31char macro file – all you need to do is to have the file open along with the files you are working on, and press Ctrl+Q shortcut. Then it will color all lines which contain more then 31 chars yellow. It is less comfortable to use when working on a particular cell, because you don’t know exactly how many characters do you need to reduce, but it is useful to check the file once your finished that really everything is fine.

As you know, we are running out of time, and the files are urgent.

I remember the main argument for omitting them in this project was that they were time-consuming…

If you want to take on some of section 1-5, go ahead. I’ll include the updated glossary on the new uploads. Sadly I can’t tell it to overwrite the old terms (if you know how to do this, let me know), but if you use View 2, you can click on the red-coloured terms and you’ll see the Dictionary translation. If it doesn’t match the current translation, change the translation so it matches the Dictionary definition.

I had just uploaded a rar file to translators files server to FTP folder -”Comments and files” subfolder.

The file is “For Spelling FRA 18ba.rar” these are the two proofread files for spellchecking and issue resolving. When spellchecking in Excel, please select only the French column to speed up the process (otherwise it jumps also to English).

The files had been proofread, so there is no need to so anything with them except of spellchecking. I think there were no issues found in the files, but if you see a comment in the third column, please resolve it.

To deliver spellchecked files, please open a ticket on OT (http://translationstop.com/OT/), and attach the files in the ticket. Please also write me the hours it took you to make. The system does not accept xls files, so please rar or zip them.

One more thing – please add _Spelled_ to file name after the vettors name after you finish working on the file.

I may have 2 files more a bit later.

I marked eyerything as “not translated” and inserted all the terms from the new glossary. (I set the original file as reference beforehand)

However, the sentences/phrases that are still the source language have to be inserted by ALT ENTER I’m afraid.

I am currently working on file 18r and the English segments don’t match the French segments at some point and the remaining 3/4th of the file are thus misaligned.

Transit warns about different segment counts but doesn’t report the file as misaligned. Is there an easy way to fix this?

This is because the translator (or his Transit software) is trying to treat the Chinese characters as a single separate line. This causes extra segments to appear.

I’ve uploaded a fixed version at

On the other hand the fix is actually quite simple, if a bit tedious.

When you encounter those Chinese characters, go to Options – Alignment – Start. Say yes to begin manual aligning. Place the cursor on the split segments and choose “Join Segment to Next”. Once the segments are joined, check to make sure the cell numbers match. If they do, save and reload, and continue proofreading. Repeat when you encounter the next Chinese lines. Alternatively, you can join or delete the extra segments and then from the Edit menu, mark the segment as untranslated and say yes when asked if you want to copy the whole source text. That will copy the segment from the .ENU file, tags included.

I think there’s about 8 of them, although I didn’t count for sure. It took me about 15 minutes to scan the whole file for Chinese lines and fix them.

If you’re already midway into proofing, just fix it yourself. Like I said, additional 15 minutes at most. If you haven’t started, just use the fixed version at the above link.

It’s okay, but it’s really risky, since I will actually be unavailable most of the morning. Tell you what, tell me which file will be done last. I’ll prepare a copy of the unproofed version first. If it arrives in time, your proofread version will replace that one. If not, well, we’ll have something sent anyway.

Technically it should be alright though. Even at 8:00 a.m. there’s still a good 8-10 hours to go prior to delivery and I should be back long before then. If you’re late, just send it anyways and we’ll sneak that in if possible.

Well, the capitalization issues have a very simple explanation.

When we tried to fix the caps in the first big excel glossary, all the words were messed up so the only simple method we found was to use the shortcut in word to change all the caps at once.

Some of the caps were brought to lower case, losing their accent in the process. Since the glossary is that big, there was no time to manually fix everything back so we just asked the translator to fix the PN when proofreading.

The caps on “Ardent” were put there because at the time the glossary was put together there was no way to know if the term was related to the “Arden”, which is a race/people in the game.

All the remarks seem to make sense but it’s a bit late to investigate or correct them by now. I’ll look into it after the proofreading if I have enough time but it’s unlikely.

The correct spelling is “…œ” though this character might or might not cause problems to be displayed correctly in the game.

This is really a detail though so don’t worry about this, just pick the one that is most commonly used in the files (I’m guessing it would be “oe” and fix the others for consistency if necessary.

Which file are you working on and why is it so much time consuming? If you are stuck with 15no files – you can stop doing them, will insert the terms automatically in Transit. The 18il files shouldn’t be taking too much time – spellchecking should be done using Excel inbuilt spellchecker.

If you are wondering why there isn’t any consistency between 3_a-d with the glossary, that’s because 3_a-d is created with the latest glossary. Any inconsistency would be from the glossary itself. For example, I have noticed that there’s no standard way of abbreviating words. Luminence is abbreviated as Lumin., lumin., and lum.

I started with the raw English text, Inserted all terms from the dictionary, set up the translated file as Reference Material, and then went through the 5d looking for any untranslated words and replacing it using the dictionary and the translated version as reference.

This means that you no longer need to do any insertion yourself nor check the glossary all the time. You can go back to doing a regular proofreading. Although keep in mind what said about capitalisation. I’m also not sure about the 31 character limit. I didn’t check for that much.

If you want, start with 5d. I’m going to work backward and do the same thing for 5c, and then 5b, and if you haven’t already finished it by then, 5a.

Accept the dictionary in 5d. But 5c, 5b, and 5a won’t include the dictionary again.

I am checking the character limit on 5d and I am not sure Transit character count is accurate. In Transit, apostrophes accont for 6 characters. For example, “Bottes du dragon d’euphorie” counts as 32 characters in Transit – thus exceeding the limit, while the real count would be 27. Should I trust Transit or follow the real count?

Follow the real count.

What happens is that hyphens, quotes, and apostrophes are often treated as tags rather than as characters. I have no idea why, because you can type them as characters, but when you import them from the Excel files or from other projects, they’re sometimes treated as tags.

Anyway, apostrophes as tags are actually stored as [']. That’s 6 characters. Quotes are similar. ["]. Causes me no end of confusion. When exported though, there’s no difference between tags or characters. They all come out the same.

I am not sure we should modify the glossary at the very end of the project, it would create inconsistencies with the processed files.

The updates created were section 18 specific (spells). If you really want to modify the glossary, you should ask to care care of it by himself since he has been in charge of the glossary since the very beginning. I had no input in the glossary and I tried to follow the established glossary as much as possible whan I translated or proofed files (basically, column B of the French reduced file).

In fact, let’s take a look at the glossary first, since the proofreading of section 1-5 are getting bottlenecked by the glossary. But I absolutely need a single French translation for each English term.

Which one to use? The convention is that the 2nd one is the latest version. But Refuge is not a translation of Bedlam. Later on I will find sections where the 2nd one is a better translation than the 1st French translation.

Spent 30 minutes exporting the file to Excel so I can compare it easier with the English. My conclusion: 18m is so bad that it’s unusable.

I’ll ask to retranslate, this time paying attention to the tags. If he’s unwilling or unable, I’ll have somebody else do it.

I have bad news. The file 18m you submitted is unusable. I can’t speak of the translation quality, but the tags are completely messed up. This won’t do. The tags tell the eventual game what font to use and where certain variables go, so the placement of the tags are critical for this project.

I believe you have used the “Hide Tags” feature of Transit. That won’t do for this project. I recommend that instead you use at least the Short Tags view during translation and Full tags view when you there’s a lot of tags.

Would it be possible to redo 18m within the next 24 hours counting from the time I hit the send button of this email? I’m sorry I can’t give you more time, but the deadline’s technically past already. Also, if I don’t hear from you within the next 12 hours, I’ll scrap your translation and have someone else translate it instead. I had just uploaded two rar files to translators files server to FTP folder -”Comments and files” subfolder.

First file is 15onspelling_issue_resolving.rar ¢‚¬œ these are the two unproofread files for spellchecking and issue resolving. When spellchecking in Excel, please mark only the French column to speed up the process (otherwise it jumps also to English).

Additionally I uploaded for_issue_resolving18il.rar, which contains 2 proofread and probably spellchecked files. In them, there are 2 small issues in each:18l in lines 27 and 78; file 18i in lines 276 and 282. Please check them, resolve the issues, but no need to spellcheck.

Thank you for your concern, though I was the one who made the corrections to the glossary so, obviously, if I translated Array as Aura or Bedlam as Refuge I had good reasons.

Here are the reasons why (which I already explained to and Jennifer when I organized the change)

“Array” actually refers to a specific kind of spells in the game. Either they grant the user with stat boost + inflict abnormal states to enemies who come nearby at the cost of constant SP loss (think of it as the character starts to glow, loses his SP quickly while the enemies around take damage without even being physically attacked). Or it refers to huge “magic shields” which can be set to protect an entire city.

I thought “Aura” was, in French, a better alternative to “parure”, “faisceau”, “etalage”, “ordre”, and other mistranslations scattered everywhere in the files.

Bedlam is meaningless in French with this spelling. Bedlam actually means Bethleem which is the town where JC was born. Bedlam is actually often takes the meaning of “Asylum” (for the sick) which can be translated in French as Asile or… Refuge. I also considered Sanctuary but it’s already used in WoW and I thought both games were similar enough already.

Now, maybe you have done all this research work already and have come up with better French translations for both these terms, in which case I would be happy to hear them. I already received the approval of both and Jennifer a month ago regarding these two specific corrections. I thought it was enough, but I’ll make sure to run all the glossary corrections by you from now on.

Basically, I don’t think the alternative translation of Array-Aura and Bedlam-Refuge are correct. But I don’t have the expertise to decide this myself. You do.

Rather than asking everytime I run into alternatives, can you instead you go through the merged glossary and every time you run across alternates, decide which one to use, copy it to the 2nd column (if necessary), and so on. Oh, watch out for misalignment too. If there’s no alternates, just keep going. It’s only alternates we’re worried about.

Once you are done, just delete the entire 3rd column and email me. I’ll try then to convert it into a .ENU/.FRA pair that people can use as Reference Material for section 1-5.

No worries, it’s just that it took us a lot of time to justify the changes to ‘s clients when I came up with the corrections so it pains me to start justifying everything again given the little time we have left before the deadline.

I wasn’t sure you were on the project at that point so I thought you were contesting the corrections after all this time. Obviously you weren’t there yet so it’s a legitimate question, my bad, I haven’t got any rest for weeks and it’s starting to get the best of me.

Things will be a lot better with the next project since everyone will be there from the beginning. Also, I think it could be great if there was a way to send you emails directly instead of going through this interface that keeps expiring on me. If there was a way to send you and CCs of the emails I exchange with it would probably keep everyone up to date more efficiently. Transit warns about different segment counts but doesn’t report the file as misaligned. Is there an easy way to fix this?

If you have the file at hand, the issue is between segments 450-453, then the following segments seem to be in the right order except that they are misaligned.

Please let me know if there is a way to fix this, otherwise I can try to proofread it like that.

Okay, I have merged column 2 and 3 and reuploaded the glossary in the CS (translator’s files – French Glossary Merged.xls)

Also, since I constantly keep track of the updates, I have uploaded the latest version of the glossary updates (recent -glossary updates.xls) It should also be added to the glossary file.

I tried to do it myself but I have no idea how to paste the third column while overwriting only the duplicates.

This is because the translator (or his Transit software) is trying to treat the Chinese characters as a single separate line. This causes extra segments to appear.

On the other hand the fix is actually quite simple, if a bit tedious.

I think there’s about 8 of them, although I didn’t count for sure. It took me about 15 minutes to scan the whole file for Chinese lines and fix them.

If you’re already midway into proofing, just fix it yourself. Like I said, additional 15 minutes at most. If you haven’t started, just use the fixed version at the above link.

I forgot to reply you about the hyphens. If they are protected by tags, and they are in the right location in the sentence – I guess they can stay that way. If not, you can temporarily disable tag protection and delete them, replacing with these 3 small circles (I don’t have them on key-board), and they will be easily replaced on vetting stage.

How is the condition of the files?

Ignore it. It’s the software thinking that the period represents the end of sentence, which usually is, except in abbreviations. We have a list of exceptions for Abbreviations, but sometimes new Abbreviations snuck up on us. It’s minor, because the export will rejoin them as long as nobody starts adding /Newlines or similar.

We have no idea why this happens too, and it’s very annoying to us. Ideally we’d love to be able to dissect the code and remove whatever it is that makes them reference the English, but that’s beyond us.
