Available Translator Proofreading Glossary Files

Thanks for your reply. Comments below:

As can be found in the new guidelines, the fact that there is a

genitive s in the source does not always mean it has to be tranlated that

way (e.g.: Master’s Boots can acceptably be translated as Meister-Stiefel).

Agreed.

Of course, Stiefel des Meisters is also possible and may sound better in

some instances.

I even think with more generic terms “Meister-Stiefel” is better. “Stiefel des Meisters” might imply that there is only one “Meister” (which we don’t know). But in the case of “Katakomben der Kunigin” it is clear that it is the specific catacombs of a specific queen.

Still, it might not be feasible to have a hard rule about this. Later in my file, I had NPC’s titles such as Thor’s Servant, that I translated as “Diener des Thor”. Again, I think this looks nicer (although Thor-Diener would not be too bad), but I also translated many things as Noun-Noun-Noun in other parts in the file.

So, it really depends on the specific situation. However, I have the impression that some translators never use the genitive construction. Maybe we could at least leave it open to everybody to make a choice. Or even encourage them to make a conscious choice.

As already stated, brevity was initially a concern for building such

terms. Also, there is absolutely no doubt that Kufu-Wusten-Tiefen is a

proper name and that it must therefore be a definite, singular place, item

or name.

(…)

indicator of that). So, Waldland-Gebirge would be unambiguous. Again, this

is very contrived, but I hope you see my point.

Yes, I do.

In case we do not face such restrictive rules concerning that, would you

agree that we could open this up and leave it to the translators? In that

case, translators would be free to use “Waldland-Gebirge” along with

“Gebirge des Waldlands” (and so on), making the job a bit harder on

proofreaders. Of course, it would be the translator’s responsibility to

make ABSOLUTELY sure that both versions cannot be mixed up with any other

proper name and are singular and definitive. We could use only one version

in the dictionary, but if the translator felt they needed to change it in

their context, they would be free to do so.

I even think we should only use one version of a term. So if “Waldland-Gebirge” is in the glossary, it should be used unless there are major stylistic reasons to make an exception. Otherwise we may just confuse the player. But I think we should also allow that some terms (like Tempel des Krebses) are in the glossary in THAT form, and consistently used so.

So, I was a bit too enthusiastic about my genitive constructions, but I do think they are much better for some terms, so I hope we will be able to decide on a case-by-case basis.

My file will be done tomorrow, and I will just leave the terms as I have deemed best in each case (but I will also consider the case of “Waldland-Gebirge”), and then I guess I will see whether you agree to them. This should be easier than coming up with a linguistic theory of when to use what form ;-). But thanks for discussing it!

Of the people in your group ( ,Doris, et al), are everyone taking a vacation until May 31st too? Who’s available?

How far are you getting along with 02_Glossary?

Anyway, a preliminary glossary is availabe at http://translationstop.com/files/Glossary/

We don’t expect it to be immediately useful, since the glossary parts are selected not to overlap each other. However, it’s made available so you can use it as reference while translating the other parts of the glossary.

Both the Excel file (Book3_glossary_DEU) and a dictionary file are available. These files will be updated as the other parts of the glossary are done.

if you choose to download the dictionary file, make sure you back up your current Names_Places_Skills file. The dictionary is attached to the raw untranslated version of that file and if you overwrite it by accident you may lose your previous work.

is taking a long week off (until May 31st) and we need to temporarily fill the lead translator position. You are amongst the short list of people he recommended, and we’re wondering if you have the time and inclination to do so.

Despite the title, there isn’t much extra work for a lead translator compared to the usual proofreading/translating. You’re responsible for keeping the glossary consistent, and be the final voice when there are two or more possible interpretation to the same sentence.

According to the data, your rate is $20/hour. Is that correct?

If you are willing and have the time, we’ll shift the proofreading job for the glossary from to you and ask that you take a look at the preliminary glossary and ensure that everything is consistent. Any extra time incurred during this can be billed at the usual rate.

Sorry to disturb you again, but I still haven’t received any money from , we’re on 22 May!!! I received only $303 on 19 April, owes me something like $2.500 and now I don’t even have enough money to pay my rent! What the hell is he doing?!

Please forward my message, I’m really starting to get mad!

Actually, pretty much all the three files in that folder are yours to proofread.

How far have you gotten with 03_glossary anyway?

—————————-

I am working on glossary 02 at the moment (translation)

I also work on evaluating the samples from at the same time, and, more importantly, I am moving toScotlandover this weekend, I just arrived a few hours ago.

As you can see I am already back online and doing my best though all these different assignments at the same time aren’t making things easy. I will try to send you Glossary 02 fully translated by tomorrow morning, then will pick up the pace with the proofreading.

is aware of all this, I thought he would have informed you. Anyway, don’t worry I will double my working time as soon as I’m settled and will get back on track quickly.

With many thanks

Thank you for information.

I mean invoices for 5-09/04 and 19-24/04.

I received payment for 19-24/04.

You did not receive payment for your first invoice?

Please let me know.

I received payment for 19-24/04.

I have a suggestion to make concerning the glossary. Assault and attack seem to be very similar terms in English. To keep them separated and consistent in German translations I would suggest to translate

assault as Sturmangriff

attack as Angriff

I have just noticed that there are different translations of “assault” in the glossary, which might cause confusion and inconsistency later.

How far are you getting for your parts in 02_glossary and Items_reduced?

Your question:

“How far are you getting for your parts in 02_glossary and Items_reduced?”

(Since the almighty system doesn’t allow me to answer the message directly, I apparently have to copy/paste your question here so you have a reference).

My answer:

My part in “02_glossary” I will finish by tomorrow evening.

“Items reduced” I have not started yet. I was assigned the file without having requested it; feel free to assign it so somebody else if time is pressing.

If you do, please let me know.

Cheers

Yes, I can help with this until is back.

According to the data, your rate is $20/hour. Is that correct?

This is a bit low, I can offer you a rate of $22/hour (last time, I offered $25/hour for proofreading, so I wonder where the $20 are from).

Best,.

Okay, let’s be so we understand each other. Why the attitude? If you have something at home interfering with work, the professional thing to do is to explain that you have some private stuff going and let us know that things are going to be late.

You have some 2500 words assigned on the 18th. It is now the 24th and you propose to finish it on the 25th evening. That’s a whole week for 2500 words. Unusually slow for you.

Next, sure, you did not ask for Items reduced, but when I assigned that file to you, you wrote back “Confirmed” within 45 minutes. If you did not want the work or were/are too busy for it, you should have declined back then.

Quit the attitude. You’re supposed to be a pro, so act like one.

About Items_reduced, I’ll have someone else take it. While we have a good two months still, I don’t see why other translators should be idle wh you are overworked.

—————————-

I just tried to send you a message, but have no clue whether it got through or not, since it doesn’t show up in my outbox. Hoops galore. Luckily I copied it, so here it is again:

Regarding my attitude:

I apologize, you’ve been suffering the wrath of my failed attempts to get some rudimentary communication going.

I’ve sometimes been sitting here screaming when I got an e-mail which I couldn’t answer directly (“Where do I need to go to answer this? What was the password again? Why doesn’t the message display correctly? Let me log out and log back in again. How can I reply to the message? Where is there “reply” button? Oh, wait, before I can answer here, I have to log in to the other website to see what was assigned to me over there.” etc.)

It’s all a bit kafkaesque. Once you get used to it, it might get better, but the other day I tried to get a project assigned and had no idea how to go about it. I had to peruse s e-mails (lots of which were directed at the French team and did not concern me) for clues. I finally dug up the info that I had to find “Z-Get” on “OT” somewhere. This useless nugget caused me to give my first communication attempt (which, by the way, I had not all that much hope that it would reach anybody) the emotionally descriptive title “WTF”.

Again, I apologize, please don’t take it personal. 🙂

Regarding “acting like a pro”:

The foremost definition of “professional” is someone who gets paid for his/her work, which has not been the case yet.

Regarding my confirmation of “items_reduced”:

There was no due date specified, and since I had a hard time getting a project assigned the other day, I figured I might as well “stack up”.

I have no problem with you assigning the file to someone else, as I am currently drowning in work. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Regarding my work load:

I just answered an e-mail by stating that I will be able to do approx. 50,000 words until mid-July. I will request files when I am available; if you expect these files to be finished within a certain timeframe, please indicate a due date when you assign them to me.

Cheers

Jan

Got your message. There’s no need to reply to this.

I don’t know anyone who likes the Communication Sytem (what you’re using right now). The Ticket system is better, but I can’t use it to reach a specific person (the other guy has to initiate contact first). Also, if the other guy doesn’t set his profile so he gets notification when there’s a reply, then he won’t see anything until he logs back to that forum.

A better communication system is the 2nd thing that I requested (the first being “More competent French translators!”).

As for payment…. I can’t directly intervene, but I’ll ask that you and everyone else who are actually translating/proofing right now gets their accounting and payment done first.

—————————-

I know for sure that is working on accounting – with 40 translators and 500 files it does take time.

How are you?

PM who is helping with accounting came up with translator named Fabian in your proofreading report. According to the report, he translated files 9r and 9s and you commented them as excellent. The problem is that we don’t have a German translator under such name, and in the accounting sheet from the project it is noted that the files were translated by2.

Do you have an idea who could it be? Is it someone from your team?

Please let me know how to treat this translator.

Thank you!

—————————-

He answered, saying there were “emergency payments” that have been done, but apparently I wasn’t one of those who received it…

Seems like I won’t receive anything this week again, he says he’s doing his best, I guess I can trust him but that doesn’t solve my money problems…

How are you?

My name is, I am helping right now with accounting for Kenax.

I have your report which looks like:

hourly work I did was: 4 hours at $15 per hour.

thanks

To make things in order we put information into the Accounting file according to the type of work, files etc.

So could you please provided us with more detailed report that we could put it correctly?

If you find any difficulties please don’t hesitate to contact me.

—————————-

I just sent an invoice to and I will see if it’s ok since we hadn’t discussed the price for proofreading (per hour) before.

For the file 1b, I took me over 8h hours to finish it.

I hope the new project is moving forward and that you will soon have work for the “battle of the immortals” 🙂

My name is.

I am helping with accounting for Kenax.

I have some questions about your report:

1.proofreading 1cd.2c.3cd 3 hours

proofreading 3bd.5c 2 hours

As you can see closer 3d mentioned twice.

Can you please check on that.

2. proofreading repetitions_German 13/02/2010 3 hours.

Could you please let me know what section that was?

We need the information to put correctly in our Accounting system.

Thank you!

I am, helping Kenax with accounting.

Thank you for your report, but please add some more details, such as

hours per type of work (proofreading, assessment etc) and the best to have it separated by files.

We need it to place into our accounting.

Thank you!

How’sScotlandtreating you so far?

Changing the topic back to work, we can’t really move forward without our lead translator, so when do you think things are going to be back to normal?

Also, would you like to help you with the proofreading? We had intended that the lead translator handle all the proofreading so he can make the glossary consistent, but if you are busy, we can have proofread a couple of the backlogged files and have you look over the glossary for consistency and accuracy later.

Hello trying a tweak to the CS to prevent logging out. I will write this email and wait about 15 minutes before pressing Send.

—————————-

Okay waited 15 minutes and it sent without a problem, and when I switched projects in the main menu I did not log out, so hopefully at least some improvement. Perhaps you could keep your eye on it and let me know if it is better.

Yes, I didn’t receive payment for my first invoice.

Scotlandis more expensive than I thought. I am hoping to settle by the end of the week if everything goes well (that would be without taking Murphy’s law into account).

Yes, you can definitely send some proofreading assignments to Jean to lighten the load.

We were supposed to have a free week between both projects so I delayed the move as much as I could but now it is complete chaos since I have to run around the city for the viewings while working at the same time.

Also, I just wanted to let you know that I haven’t forgotten about my current translation/proofreading assignments. is also sending me priority assignments regularly with the assessments so I can’t possibly do everything at once.

I’m doing what I can right now and will make up for the lost time as soon as I am set.

With many thanks

Sure. Is there anything that you are already working on? Wouldn’t want to assign a file only to find out that you already halfway through the same file.
