Some background information about the list and the seller

 

Some customers asked for it, so, here comes the story of this email list in short. This is a list of email addresses I collected manually some years ago, mostly by browsing thousands of translation agency websites and from other sources. Now I put it together again and verified addresses if these are still valid. I used this list some years ago for a mail marketing campaign to promote my services to many agencies, which resulted a huge number of customers and gave a kickstart to my linguistic career. Now I am willing to share this list with other translators for a mere fee of $50. I am also writing a how-to about the aspects of a successful mail marketing campaign, which will be ready in a couple of weeks and I will give it to all my past and future customers. Some basic steps you MUST make before making any email marketing campaign

 

1: Create a professional, short CV.

No more than 2 pages, the shorter the better, preferably in PDF format. Your CV is your passport as a translator, so when it is sloppy, it will not attract any customers, instead, it will warn them to steer away from you. Do not put large pictures into this CV, try to keep the file size under 100 kB.

 

2: Upload this CV to some storage space and put a link to it in your promotion mail.

Do not send it as an attachment, as it will increase the chance your message will be blocked by spam filters. It will also increase the time your partners needs to download your mail, even if they are not interested in the services offered by you. If there is such a link in your mail, your message will look more professional, as your customers will be aware that you know how to handle links, uploading files, etc.

 

3: Create a professional online presence and link to it.

If you didn't make it yet, then register in online translators databases like ProZ, TranslatorsCafé, TranslationDirectory, TranslatorsBase, TranslatorsPub, etc. Must of these offer the option to upload your CV there, so you can use these for linking to your CV. There are also some country specific databases, look after if you match any of these. Also make a registration in professional social networks, I recommend LinkedIn and Xing. Include a link in your mail to your profiles there.

 

4: Create a message template.

Use this template for sending your mail. Include the following information: your working language pair(s), your experience in years, your fields of experience, your professional certifications, your professional memberships, and CAT tools your are using. Again, keep this short - your customers will take no more than 1 second (yes, no more) to decide if your mail worths reading, and when your mail is too long, it will go straight to the bin. If you have a specific target rate, you can include this as well, but keep in mind that you can reach different charging in different countries. Generally speaking, the prices are higher in countries with higher living standards.

 

 

The proper approach for a successful email marketing campaign

 

1: You are not begging for job.

You have lot of customers, you are offered many jobs and you can pick the ones you prefer. This is not true (yet)? It doesn't matter, you have to show this to your customer, so they will treat you as a serious and professional vendor. If you make your email marketing campaign properly, sooner or later this will be true anyway.

 

2: Your are a professional.

All piece of communication must display your professionalism as a linguistic service provider. There is no place for grammar and spelling mistakes, typos, etc. Your message must have a well-structured body and a proper signature with all your contact information.

 

3: Your partners are professional.

Don't treat them like fools, be responsible and consistent. Your mail is a business offer given to a respected translation company, which could be the start of a mutually fruitful cooperation, so it must be taken seriously by both parties.

 

4: You have competitors.

Translation agencies get hundreds of applications every day, but most of them is extremely sloppy. You have to stand out from the crowd, that's your key to success. Study promotion mails and newsletters you get from some major companies like ebay, AOL, etc.,and try to create the same.

 

5: You are timely.

Do not send too much emails at once. You will get many replies requesting registering in the companies database via an online form, filling out and sending back registration forms, providing additional information or making a test translation. You must be able to respond ASAP, so you must limit your amount of daily mails. IMO sending out 200 mails per day is a good volume.

 

6: You are not a spammer.

Do not use mass mailing tools. You are not selling Viagra or Cialis to unknown parties, you are making a business offer for companies involved in your business. Send each mail individually, which can be a time-consuming process, but a sure way to maximize the chance your emails will be blocked by spam filters.

 

 

The proper approach for a successful email marketing campaign

 

If you send 200 emails a day using a pre-written message template, this should take about 30 minds a day, so you have plenty of time to process incoming requests and to work on jobs received. You will experience an increasing number of translation assignments. By sending out 200 mails a day it will take about 10 weeks to go through all the 14k mails, but by that time it is most likely that you will get so many jobs that you will have hardly any time to continue your email marketing campaign. Also, taking into consideration an average sum of a translation assignment, it is most likely that your investment on purchasing this list will pay back at your first job.
