As explained in the miracles in my life<\/a>, at around the age of 6 I came to the conclusion that there is a God and that he is watching over me. If ever I was by myself and happened to swear, I’d look up and apologize. No, this is not due to any indoctrination but a self-discovery process. Throughout my childhood my various prayers were repeatedly answered in the usual “God action” and magical manner.<\/p>\n

Fast forward a bit and I guess my mother was scolded by someone because, out of the blue she came to me and heatedly blurted that I can go to church if I want but she does not want to. It was then that I learned that not everyone has the same perspective as me. And much later I found, when living in Prague<\/a> for 15 years following the fall of communism, that Czechs are the most atheistic nation in the world and that, at least at that time, both my parents were hardcore atheists.<\/p>\n

But my parents eventually separated, my mother remarried, and the real trouble began. It became unbearable to live in that household, I tried to move in with my dad, but he declined. Eventually when tempers were about to explode through the roof, it felt like my skull suffered a fine crack. It felt like I would lose my sanity if I was forced to remain in that household any longer. Perpetually bombarded by criticism, my self-confidence reached an all time low, as did my motivation, and as a result I was barely passing grade 10. I’d walk down the halls of high school completely self-conscious and I barely had any friends.<\/p>\n

With my skull now cracking, I decided I needed to get out of that place one way or another. My mother’s second husband climbed the stairs to my room. His hands were shaking and he had obviously prepared another speech. I interjected and suggested they put me into private school. He went downstairs to consult with my mother and they both returned upstairs in agreement.<\/p>\n

It was a wonderful relief to have escaped that torture chamber, but I was still suffering from a bottomless self-esteem, and I felt estranged in this new environment full of confident, rich brats, so as I lay on my back in bed, I put my hands together in prayer, looked up to the ceiling and made another earnest prayer.<\/p>\n

But this time nothing happened. I was not happy and, still stuck in that new environment, my dad not swooping in to save me as I requested, I decided to rebel. In anger I became a devout atheist and enjoyed battling it out logically with Christians, whose arguments I found naive and easy to dismantle.<\/p>\n

Fast forward I had three jobs in Banff, Alberta as I was struggling to pay back one year’s worth of student loans.<\/p>\n

It was while here that, one day out of the blue, I decided to give my dad a call, after what seemed like a decade. Got myself a bag full of change and stood in a phone booth as I made a long distance call to Colorado. We exchanged a few sentences when he suddenly blurted, “So, what are you now? A BUM?”.<\/p>\n

In any case he eventually agreed to pay for my plane ticket and thus began a long new era of discovering my younger brother and sister, and embedding myself into this new and lovely family. It so happens though that, by this time, it looked like my dad was going to suffer another failed marriage, for which reason, out of desperation, he suggested to his wife that they start going to church in order to save it. A few visits to this very charismatic church and he became a newborn Christian.<\/p>\n

From this we should remark that God does not control people but respects their free choice<\/a>. In any case, over the years I found that He works with us in subtle ways, perhaps by planting an idea into our or someone else’s head, or by moving someone else’s heart, or by causing something to happen to spark a series of butterfly effects. After all, “He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end”, and there is plenty of other scripture to indicate that He can see the past, present and future all at once<\/a>. So when it is time to perform some “God magic”, as I like to call it, it truly is magnificent to watch unfold.<\/p>\n

But now, for the first time, when visiting my newborn Christian dad for the first time, I was losing all my atheistic arguments, having met my match, so to speak. Throughout my atheistic career I had always felt that, to be fair, since I do now proclaim myself to be a devout atheist, I should eventually get around to reading the bible<\/a>. And this certainly proved the right environment to fulfil that aspiration.<\/p>\n

Forcing myself to read the book, it seemed that light was slowly emanating from the pages into my soul, gradually opening my eyes and understanding to a world that was hidden from me before. I was “seeing the light”, as they say, and since their church was very charismatic, my cold heart was melting.<\/p>\n

Over about a year my faith and believe wavered in and out, but eventually I grasped it enough that I vowed never again to let the devil veer me off track.<\/p>\n

Now that I was back on track, in hindsight my firm proclamations of being a devout atheist felt more of a protest against God, while secretly knowing He remained there all along. They were dark years, when I generally felt alone and empty. But now I was once again filled with the loving Spirit and, besides the usual frustrations of life, overall it was smooth and enjoyable sailing. Although robust and exciting enough to write it all down into at a book<\/a> one day.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to the present, I now organize private boat tours in the Philippines<\/a>, while my wife organizes tours of her own as part of the same business I started. We both work at home while raising our two beautiful children<\/a> and for the first time I actually quite enjoy my work. Once the youngest gets old enough we dream of resuming our travels, as there is so much to see in this big, beautiful world.<\/p>\n

And dreaming is like praying but you can enjoy it with your eyes closed before it eventually happens. The trick is just to trust that God is working on it and use your faith to keep marching towards the prize, one foot leading after the other.<\/p>\n
